Partitioned seating at a Sejong Korean restaurant: Bapkkot Hansang

In short

Bapkkot Hansang (밥꽃한상) is a neat fusion Korean restaurant on Doum 8-ro in Sejong. The writer shared three rice bowls (herbal boiled pork, octopus and shrimp, and gangdoenjang, a thick soybean paste sauce) plus an extra order of tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties), and the side dishes and enoki mushroom soybean paste soup were faultless. With widely spaced tables and partitions, Bapkkot Hansang is an easy place to eat and talk in Sejong.

Rice bowl spread at Bapkkot Hansang in Sejong

Today I'm sharing my visit to Bapkkot Hansang (밥꽃한상), a fusion Korean restaurant in Sejong that already has a great reputation by word of mouth. It's always one of the first places that comes up for family meals, dates, or when you just want a clean, tidy meal. I was really happy with everything from the interior to the quality of each dish, so let me walk you through the menu one by one!

What are the atmosphere and seating like at Bapkkot Hansang?

My first impression the moment I walked into Bapkkot Hansang was "It's so clean and warm." The soft lighting and wood-toned interior gave off the calm, neat feel of a proper Korean restaurant.

Generously spaced table seating

What I liked most was that there are plenty of tables, yet they're spaced out generously! With partitions between tables or just wide gaps, you can eat and chat comfortably without worrying about noise from the next table. It was spotlessly clean too, so I was in a good mood before I even took a bite.

Check out the menu. There are set meals too, but I like rice bowls.

Even the side dishes set out before the mains were something special. Stir-fried nuts, fresh kimchi (geotjeori), a refreshing cucumber salad, perilla buckwheat noodles and more: every dish was as neat and tidy as at a high-end hanjeongsik (Korean table d'hôte) place. The warm enoki mushroom soybean paste soup that comes with it was savory and soothing, a perfect match for the rice bowls.

Gangdoenjang rice bowl: savory and wholesome at once

This is the gangdoenjang rice bowl (thick, concentrated soybean paste stew over rice), full of savory flavor. Unlike ordinary gangdoenjang that's just salty, the one at Bapkkot Hansang wasn't salty at all; it was nutty and deep. I mixed the finely chopped ingredients and the savory sauce with fresh vegetables and seaweed flakes, and my stomach felt really at ease. It has a subtle, addictive pull the more you eat, so I'd strongly recommend it if you want a clean, healthy meal.

The soybean paste soup that comes with it is really good too.

Octopus and shrimp rice bowl: smoky fire flavor and sweet-spicy sauce

Second up is the octopus and shrimp rice bowl, with its appealing spicy sauce. Along with the smoky char flavor, it was loaded with plump octopus and meaty shrimp, and the chew was excellent!

It wasn't a harsh, artificial heat but a pleasant sweet-spicy kick that gets your appetite going. I mixed the plump, bouncy shrimp and chewy octopus into the rice, took a big spoonful, and all my stress just vanished. The spicy sauce coated every grain of rice, so I enjoyed it right down to the last bite.

Herbal boiled pork rice bowl: tender suyuk with no gamey smell

This is the herbal boiled pork rice bowl (hanbang suyuk deopbap) that I chose! The thick, glossy slices of suyuk (boiled pork) filling the bowl passed the looks test right away. There was no gamey smell at all, a faint aroma of herbal medicinal ingredients hung in the air, and the meat was really tender and soft to chew.

I mixed the rice underneath with fresh vegetables, the special sauce, egg strips and seaweed flakes, then topped a big piece of suyuk on it, and a clean, nutty savoriness spread through my whole mouth.

It's a flavor everyone from kids to grandparents would like, with no love-it-or-hate-it divide, so I was totally satisfied with the very first dish!

Bapkkot Hansang really uses good ingredients. Look at how plump that shrimp is.

As expected, good cooking comes from good ingredients.

The extra tteokgalbi: how is it with the rice bowls?

Last is the tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) I ordered as an extra! It came golden-brown and glossy, topped with a sweet-salty special sauce and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.

It was nicely browned outside and full of juices inside, so a nutty meaty aroma burst out with every bite. The sweet-and-salty sauce had soaked well into the meat, and putting a piece on top of the rice bowls like a side dish doubled the flavor. A perfect side menu!

Bapkkot Hansang in Sejong: wrap-up

Bapkkot Hansang in Sejong was a perfect find with nothing lacking, from the comfortable, tidy atmosphere and neat side dishes to the carefully made rice bowls and tteokgalbi. The mild herbal boiled pork bowl, the spicy octopus and shrimp bowl and the savory gangdoenjang bowl each have their own charm, so going with a group and sharing a variety was a lot of fun. If you're looking for a neat, heartfelt Korean meal in Sejong, definitely stop by Bapkkot Hansang! It'll be a meal with no regrets. ❤️
