Today I want to introduce Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch, a great spot near Jongak Station and Gwanghwamun for when you're craving thick, generous slices of sashimi.
I visited on a weekend during the early evening, and the restaurant was cleaner and had more varied seating than I expected — good for solo diners, dates, office lunches, and larger group gatherings alike.
What stood out most was that both the sushi and sashimi I tried were overall quite thick-cut, which really impressed me. Let me go through it piece by piece ☺️
How to walk from Jongak Station to Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch
Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch sits between Jongak Station and Gwanghwamun Station. It's about a 3-minute walk from Exit 1 of Jongak Station — just go straight from the exit, so it was easy to find!

Just head for the Tower 8 building — there's also a signboard out front pointing the way to the restaurant ☺️

Once you reach the Tower 8 building, take the elevator down to basement level 1!

When you arrive, a clean exterior greets you. The menu is also posted right in front of the restaurant, so you can check it out beforehand 👀

Seating for solo diners and for groups
The inside of Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch had an overall bright, clean atmosphere.

In the center is a long bar seat, with partitioned 4-person tables around it. Toward the back there's also a large table that seats 6–8 people, so there was a fairly wide range of seating options.
If you want a simple solo sushi meal, the bar seats are great; for two, the 2–4 person tables work well; and for larger groups, the inner tables are ideal — so I'd recommend it for office lunches or solo dining near Jongak Station. It's especially convenient given the location between Jongak Station and Gwanghwamun, making it easy for nearby office workers to stop by for lunch or dinner after work.
I visited around 5:30 pm on a weekend, an early dinner hour, so I could eat at a relaxed pace!
The 40,000-won mixed sashimi platter: thick salmon and red seabream
At first I considered just ordering sushi, but since I wanted to try several kinds of raw fish together, I ordered the mixed sashimi platter and the special sushi set!

- 🐟 Mixed sashimi ₩40,000
- 🍣 Special sushi 15pc ₩19,000
First they brought out a warm broth and wasabi! Soy sauce, pickled radish, and pickled ginger were all already on the table, so you just help yourself to as much as you need.

And here's the mixed sashimi platter that came out first!

You can tell even from the photos that each slice is cut quite thick. Rather than thin slices, each piece gives you a real sense of texture and heft. The overall portion was generous too.
Among everything I tried that day, the salmon and red seabream were the tastiest — the salmon was soft yet felt fresh, and the red seabream had a light, chewy texture ☺️
Satisfaction with sashimi really depends on the thickness and texture, and this place definitely felt generous. Recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy a hearty plate of raw fish!
Is the 15-piece special sushi set worth 19,000 won?

Next came the special sushi 🍣 — 15 pieces packed neatly onto one plate, with tidy presentation! Like the sashimi, the fish on the sushi was thick, giving each piece a stronger presence.
Considering the price of ₩19,000 for 15 pieces, the overall portion and composition were quite satisfying. I'd recommend it for lunch too if you work near Jongak Station or Gwanghwamun!

Final verdict on Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch
Overall, this visit to Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch left me thinking it's a great choice when you want thick, generous slices of raw fish.
It's easy to find from Jongak Station and also close to Gwanghwamun, so I'd recommend it for a lunch or solo meal near Jongak Station or Gwanghwamun Station whenever you're craving especially generous sashimi!
