Sharosu-gil gyukatsu and steki sets on a weekday dinner: Izawa
In short
Izawa Sharosugil Branch is a gyukatsu (beef cutlet) and steki (steak) Japanese restaurant on the second floor at the entrance of Sharosu-gil, by Seoul National University Station in Gwanak, Seoul. On a weekday evening the writer and a close friend ordered one gyukatsu set and one steki set, 18,000 won each, grilled the meat themselves on a mini charcoal stove and shared both plates, with the peanut sauce and the pink salt with wasabi coming out best. Since diners set their own doneness and the staff keep swapping in fresh grills and solid fuel, Izawa works well for two people splitting two sets.

It had been a while since I'd seen a close friend, and since we both live near Sharosu-gil, we went looking for a place to eat meat nearby. We decided on Izawa, which is known as a top gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) spot in Sharosu-gil with a nice, clean vibe!
Where is Izawa Sharosugil Branch, and when is it open?

Izawa is on the 2nd floor of a building right at the entrance of Sharosu-gil. We passed through the waiting zone and headed inside. Apparently Izawa is a traditional Japanese restaurant known for being the first to introduce gyukatsu in Korea. They also have birthday perks and allow pets inside.

Why Izawa feels tidier than most gyukatsu restaurants
I've been to a lot of gyukatsu restaurants, and Izawa had the nicest, cleanest atmosphere of them all! There wasn't much meat smell or smoke, and the white-and-beige interior is so cute — I came with a friend, but I thought it would make a great date spot too.

Maybe because there are a lot of students around, there were quite a few people eating solo too...? Eating gyukatsu alone felt kind of dignified, honestly. Overall it's neat and tidy enough to be comfortable whether you're in a group, alone, or on a date. Seating includes sofa seats and table seats, with both 4-person and 2-person tables to choose from.

What two people ordered at Izawa, and what it cost
Izawa's signature dishes are the gyukatsu set and the steki (steak) set, each ₩18,000, and you can upgrade to a double portion of meat for an extra ₩3,000. We ordered one gyukatsu set, one steki set, and a cola.
The menu looked like it was made with AI and it was so cute haha. The signature dishes are the gyukatsu and steki sets, but they also have rice bowls and ramen options.
- 🩷Gyukatsu set – ₩18,000
- 🩷Steki set – ₩18,000
- 🩷Cola – ₩2,000
Next time I'll try downloading the birthday coupon on Naver Map, since they apparently give you one of two ramen options for free — I'll have to use that.

When you order a grill-it-yourself dish, they prep a mini charcoal stove with solid fuel for you.

What comes with the gyukatsu and steki sets, sauce by sauce
The gyukatsu set and steki set came out quickly after ordering! Everything's plated neatly.
The gyukatsu set comes with gyukatsu, a light broth soup, salad, two side dishes, rice, and peanut sauce, teriyaki sauce, and wasabi.
The steki set comes with the same composition, but ask for an extra steak sauce on the side. There's also plenty of pink salt on the table, so you can dip the meat in salt and eat it with wasabi too.

Personally, I liked dipping it in the peanut sauce on the right, or in salt with wasabi, best!

Gyukatsu or steki: what is the difference at Izawa?
Izawa's gyukatsu is fried once and then grilled on the stove, giving it a crispy-but-moist texture, while the steki keeps the beef's natural savory fat flavor alive. If two of you order one of each, you get to try both.
Time to put the meat on the mini stove and grill~
It was nice that we could each order a different dish and share both the gyukatsu and the steki. If the grill plate gets messy from the juices, you can ask staff to swap it out! They each have their own charm, so you can pick based on your taste.

The well-grilled steki and gyukatsu! Both were really tender, and best of all, I could cook them exactly to my liking. I tried well-done and also medium-rare, and honestly, medium-rare was the tastiest haha.
Service at Izawa: fresh grills and solid fuel all evening
When we asked them to swap the plate, they grilled some more for us~ The owner and staff here are especially kind. They kept walking around checking whether the plate needed swapping or the fuel needed refilling, and the moment the flame went out, they'd show up like clockwork and take care of it right away. Seriously, the kindness was maxed out — the best.

The portions were generous, and grilling and chatting with my friend made the time fly by — it was really fun! I think I'll come back next time I'm craving meat. If you're looking for a different kind of restaurant near Sharosu-gil, or a date spot, I'd recommend giving Izawa a try~!
