In short

Munhwa Bakery is a same-day-bake takeout bakery at the entrance to Ikseon-dong in Jongno, Seoul, 199m from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station. Arriving right at opening meant walking straight in with no wait and buying garlic bread, walnut bread and squid ink milk cream bread, plus a free salt bread for leaving a receipt review. Munhwa Bakery only sells bread baked that same day, and whatever doesn't sell gets donated to underprivileged groups — kids missing meals, seniors living alone, people with disabilities living at home, free meal kitchens, homeless shelters, and social welfare facilities. It's become a well-known Jongno 3-ga favorite and gets a lot of love.

Whenever I'm near Ikseon-dong in Jongno, I make a point of stopping by if I can. The storefront itself is so pretty haha.

Bread display shelves inside Munhwa Bakery

The second you walk in, there's this incredible parade of bread!!! The bakers in the back seemed to be constantly making more, and bread keeps coming out on those huge trays!!!!

Bread coming out on a large tray

I get so excited every single time I come here lolllll. Whenever I'm in Ikseon-dong I end up peeking in lol. I always tell myself I'll try something new, but it's hard to skip the stuff I always love.... lolllllll

What time is there no wait at Munhwa Bakery?

If you come on a weekend after lunch, be ready for a long line — so I'd recommend coming right at opening, or around 1pm when it's quieter. Since I came right when it opened, I got in with no wait at all. Oh but avoid after 3pm...... watch out, bread might be gone. The good stuff sells out a lot by then!!

The lineup isn't super varied!!!!! But that's exactly what makes it good! It gives off this specialist feel haha.

Coffee bread on display at Munhwa Bakery

Apparently the coffee bread tastes best if you eat it right when you buy it!!!! Something about the cream inside — I really wanted to inhale it with an americano. If I didn't think about the calories I could probably eat three. Next time I'm definitely eating it fresh..!! Hehe haha. The smell of bread here is just incredible...!!!! You walk in and instantly feel happy.

Seeing the shelves packed with bread just puts me in a good mood too haha. And agonizing over what to pick is part of the fun! I always get the mugwort rice cake bread, but today I decided to try something else.

Oh, walnut bread. Ah, the coffee cream bread and garlic bread I always want no matter when I come.

Garlic bread, walnut bread, squid ink milk cream bread, and I got salt bread too from writing a receipt review!

Wow, it's genuinely delicious lolll. The condensed milk cream is so soft, and the bread is soft too, and they go so well together!!! You really have to try it. The bread was nice and pillowy too, which paired beautifully with the cream.

Salt bread, free for a receipt review

This is the salt bread I got for writing a receipt review — I don't think they actually sell it, but it's really, really good...... Nice and salty, soft, just really nice. I wish they'd sell this one.

Walnut bread

Walnut bread!!!!! This is exactly the style I love, and yeah, it was really, really good. Very good. It's exactly the flavor you'd imagine — and that's exactly the flavor, and it's delicious. Really loved it><

Crisp-crusted walnut bread from Munhwa Bakery

Crisp and sweet on the outside, a slightly coarse crumb inside — and that outside is insanely good. Exactly the flavor I love. Truly the best.

Garlic bread, the Munhwa Bakery signature

And finally, the garlic bread everyone waits for. Of course it's good — it's their bestseller, and it lives up to it..!! It's got this creamy feel that makes it really soft. You have to eat this one, it's non-negotiable.

So good....!! They nailed the garlic seasoning.

Verdict: the bakery to hit when you're in Ikseon-dong

There are a lot of great bakeries in Ikseon-dong, but there's a reason Munhwa Bakery in particular has such long lines!! Open-running it is so worth it >_< Next time I'm definitely trying the coffee bread!! Prices are also on the affordable side, from ₩3,000s up to ₩6,500, so you can eat really, really good bread without breaking the bank, and it's great value haha. So I really think this is a bakery you have to visit when you come to Ikseon-dong!!
