Jongno 3-ga bakery on a rainy day: cut-to-go onion bagel, Munhwa
In short
Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery on Donhwamun-ro, between Jongno 3-ga Station and Ikseon-dong in Seoul. On a rainy weekday visit, garlic bread, rice chestnut bread and an onion bagel were all sliced and bagged at the counter, and even in the humid weather the garlic bread never turned soggy, with the cream cheese onion bagel the clear favourite. Munhwa Bakery sells only bread baked that day and gives whatever is left to people in need.

I had some errands to run around Jongno 3-ga and stopped by Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) nearby to pick up some bread. I don't usually eat bread all that often, but whenever I pass by and catch a good bread smell or spot a famous bakery, I can't help but stop in haha.

Where is Munhwa Bakery, and what are its hours?
Munhwa Bakery is at 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and it's open 11:00 - 20:00.

It's also fairly close to Ikseon-dong, so it looked like a good place to grab bread on your way home after wandering around Ikseon-dong. So if you're looking for a good bakery near Ikseon-dong or Jongno 3-ga, this one's worth keeping in mind.

Two groups in at a time: how long is the wait on a weekday?
We visited on a weekday, but there were still quite a lot of people. Since the shop isn't very big inside, they can't let too many people in at once, so it's set up so only two groups enter at a time. We couldn't go straight in either — we waited outside for a bit before it was our turn.

There was a bit of a wait because of the crowd, but standing outside the bakery trying to decide what to buy was kind of fun in its own way haha. The moment the door opened and we stepped in, the first thing that hit us was the smell of bread! That warm, toasty smell from the golden-brown loaves, and the first thing that caught my eye was the garlic bread!

What bread is on display at Munhwa Bakery?
Every loaf was displayed so temptingly, and there were so many kinds that I spent a good while agonizing over what to pick...!

There was white bean paste bread, rice cheese bread, maple cream cheese bread, black sesame bread, milk cream bread, peanut bread, and more — just reading the names made me curious about so many of them, and I found myself wanting to come back next time and buy a little of everything to try one by one haha.

Why Munhwa Bakery sells only bread baked that day
One thing I really liked about Munhwa Bakery is that they only sell bread made that day! Whatever doesn't sell is reportedly given to people in need — children who go without meals, elderly people living alone, people with disabilities living at home, free meal centers, homeless shelters, social welfare facilities, and so on.

These days, taste matters, but so does how a place is run, and it just felt right to hear that unsold bread doesn't get thrown away but instead goes to where it's needed. It made buying bread feel a little more meaningful.

Cut to order and packed: how the counter service works
I bought garlic bread, rice chestnut bread, and onion bagel at Munhwa Bakery. When I was checking out, they asked first — would you like it cut? — so I had the garlic bread and onion bagel cut for easier eating. It seemed more convenient to eat right away at home and easier to share, so I asked for it to be cut.

The woman running the counter was quick and kind. Even with people constantly coming in and buying bread, she packed everything up fast.

One more thing I liked — instead of just grabbing bread straight off the display and bagging it, she handed over pieces that were already neatly pre-wrapped. There was also a partition set up at the front, which gave the sense that they're mindful about hygiene too.

Did the garlic bread go soggy after a rainy-day walk home?
They packed the bread into a paper bag. It was raining and humid that day, so I worried the garlic bread might go soggy, but when I got home and tried it, it wasn't soggy at all haha.

The garlic bread had a chewy texture and tasted true to what garlic bread should be. It wasn't too strong or heavy, so it worked well as a snack, and the rice chestnut bread was nicely plain and easy to eat too!

The one to order at Munhwa Bakery: the cream cheese onion bagel
Out of everything I bought, the one I liked best by far was the onion bagel, and I really want to recommend it!!! I'm more of a Korean-food person and don't usually eat bread often, but I genuinely enjoyed this onion bagel.
That chewy bagel texture, the crunch of onion, plus cream cheese on top — best combo ever..🩵 The second I finished it I regretted only buying one onion bagel instead of more ㅠㅠ Next time I go, I'm definitely buying several onion bagels haha.
