A famous alley spot for when you're stuck on what to eat for lunch near Isu Station Bangbaedong Ssalguksu

Why Bangbaedong Ssalguksu is worth it for lunch near Isu Station
With props and interior that felt like they'd been lifted straight from Vietnam, what stuck with me most at Bangbaedong Ssalguksu Isu Branch was the broth — clean yet rich and delicious. If you're stuck on a simple but filling lunch idea near Isu Station, I'd recommend stopping by.

Inside Bangbaedong Ssalguksu: how many seats?
Clearly a Vietnamese pho place at a glance — today's destination!! The unpretentious feel made it look comfortable to walk into.
I figured there'd be a wait at lunchtime, but since there's space set up inside, you can wait comfortably even if it's raining or snowing, right?
In the cozy space, there are about 4 tables for 2-4 people plus solo seats, holding around 20 people at once.
Not flashy, but the unpretentious feel made it even more appealing. It felt like a place people casually come to whether solo dining, having a family meal out, eating with coworkers, or gathering with friends :)
You can help yourself to the basic banchan from the self-serve corner, taking as much as you'll eat.

If you need rice, you can just help yourself without feeling awkward about it. I hadn't even thought about rice when grabbing banchan, but once I tasted the pho that's so popular for lunch near Isu Station, I understood why it's there.

I think this is a place you'll want to come back to once you've tried it. Once the cold wind starts blowing, I'll probably think of it more and stop by often.

What we ordered and the self-serve table setting
Tangy, crunchy pickled onions were served alongside hoisin sauce, hot chili sauce, and minced chili on the table, so I could add them to my taste.

- Pineapple fried rice (₩12,000)
- Cha gio (₩6,000)
- Fresh spring rolls (₩6,000)
Combo pho (12,000 won)
Even one topping alone would probably taste great, but wanting to enjoy a variety of textures and flavors, I ordered the combo pho topped with brisket, beef short rib, and raw beef tenderloin — it felt like ordering a large portion.

With so many toppings piled into one bowl, the pho alone felt filling!! If you usually eat a lot or are watching your diet in the evening, this would make a satisfying lunch near Isu Station without any guilt. It was surprising how harmonious the different meats were despite their different tastes and textures.

Pineapple fried rice (12,000 won)
Dishes with pineapple in them tend not to feel greasy and have a way of perking up your appetite with their distinct savory-sweetness and freshness. That's why I chose pineapple fried rice for the first time in a while, and it came with plenty of smoky wok flavor — a taste anyone, any age, would like.

The pineapple was cut about the same size as the onion, and the amount was well-balanced so you'd occasionally bite into a piece — nice texture. And the nice touch of serving some separately so you could eat it as a palate cleanser mid-meal or like a dessert!!

They also served a soup that felt made with real care, which I enjoyed eating too.

Cha gio, the fried spring rolls
A good side to grab while eating pho, the cha gio (fried spring rolls) came as 4 pieces, a reasonable amount. Most of all, since they're handmade rather than fried from store-bought product, the quality was on another level, fried crispy.
Vietnamese fresh spring rolls
Also good as a beer snack, the fresh spring rolls are a Vietnamese-style dish wrapping vegetables and seafood in bite-sized rolls — personally, I loved the spicy kick from the bell pepper.

You can enjoy the clear, light broth as is, or if you want that extra umami like we did by adding sauce, it's a good idea to try adding it partway through, once you're about halfway done.

Cilantro is entirely a matter of personal preference!! Just ask for it if you want it.
My husband loves it so much he always makes sure to have some, and it had been a while since I'd seen cilantro this fresh.
I like adding hot chili to the pickled onions and putting them on top of the meat or noodles. The crunchy texture kind of reminds me of kimchi, so it's totally my thing~~

The vegetable spring rolls, fresh spring rolls, and cha gio all made great beer snacks. If you're visiting with a group, ordering a variety to share sounds like a good choice too.

Completely won over by the rich pho broth, I ended up mixing in rice too~~~
Final verdict on Bangbaedong Ssalguksu Isu Branch
I used to think pho fills you up but you get hungry again quickly, but the rich, deep broth was delicious, the toppings were generous, and the sides were handmade — all of it made for a satisfying meal.
If you want a hearty meal with a clean broth-based dish, I'd recommend pho as a lunch option near Isu Station.
