Marinated beef short ribs at Gatgalbi, a Sangam-dong galbi house

In short

Gatgalbi Mapo Sangam DMC is a galbi (grilled beef rib) restaurant on Maebongsan-ro 2-gil in Mapo-gu, Seoul, a short walk from Digital Media City Station. The writer ordered the marinated beef short ribs with lettuce wraps, pickled onion and jangajji (soy-pickled vegetables), plus doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and dongchimi guksu mari (noodles in chilled radish water kimchi), and found the sweet marinade and gentle charcoal smoke a good match. Gatgalbi Mapo Sangam DMC is worth recommending for a family meal or work dinner in Sangam-dong.

I'd been craving sweet marinated beef short ribs for a while, so I went to Gatgalbi Mapo Sangam DMC.

I usually eat pork more often, but that day I really wanted beef short ribs. Beyond the marinated beef ribs, the dongchimi guksu mari (cold radish-water noodles) and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) were both pretty good too — a solid find in Sangam-dong.

Where is Gatgalbi Mapo Sangam DMC, and what does it look like?

Gatgalbi Mapo Sangam DMC is at 9 Maebongsan-ro 2-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, on the 1st floor. The big Gatgalbi sign on the building's exterior is visible from far away, so it wasn't hard to find. It's not far from Sangam Culture Square or the DMC Promotion Hall, which makes it a decent spot for office dinners or family meals in the area.

The wood-finished exterior with the big Gatgalbi sign made it easy to spot. In front of the entrance there was a board showing the signature meat menu and lunch specials, so I checked the menu before going in.

How much is the weekday lunch special at Gatgalbi?

On weekdays they also sell a charcoal-grilled set and a Jeju black pork jeyuk (spicy stir-fry) set. At the time I took photos, it was ₩10,000 per person with a minimum order of two servings.

There was a sign saying Seoul Pay and Onnuri gift certificates were accepted, along with a Seoul-city-recommended restaurant sticker.

Inside the restaurant and the self-serve side dish bar

Inside the restaurant there's a separate women's restroom, which was convenient since you didn't have to step outside during the meal. The men's restroom, though, is outside.

Walking in, the first thing that caught my eye was the unique lighting hanging from the ceiling. Looking closer, it resembled a 'gat' (갓), the traditional Korean hat. Since the restaurant is named Gatgalbi, I guess they matched the lighting to the hat shape too.

There's also a self-serve bar where you can help yourself to extra side dishes.

On the wall were photos introducing signature dishes like raw pork ribs, marinated beef ribs, and chadolbaegi (thinly sliced beef brisket). There was also a certificate confirming domestic Korean pork was used.

There are various menu items, but this time we chose marinated beef short ribs, which we hadn't had in a while.

How did the marinated beef short ribs taste?

The marinated beef short ribs at Gatgalbi Mapo Sangam DMC were wide, thick cuts with the marinade soaked in nicely. Once we ordered, a set of basic side dishes was laid out around the grill — lettuce, pickled onion, seasoned bean sprouts, salad, and jangajji (pickled vegetables), a good variety to go with the meat.

You can even feel the glossy shine just from the photo, right?

It was tender to chew, with a sweet and salty marinade flavor. Not too strong or overwhelming — the kind of familiar marinated rib taste that's easy for anyone to enjoy. Maybe because I hadn't had marinated beef ribs in so long, my chopsticks kept going back for more. The gentle charcoal smoke made it great with rice too.

Side dishes that made the galbi even better

Marinated beef short ribs served with pickled onion

Eating well-grilled meat with the pickled onion balanced out the marinade's sweetness and the meat's richness. The crunchy onion paired quite well with the meat.

The jangajji was also great alongside the meat. The salty, tangy flavor meant I could keep eating the meat without getting tired of it.

I also tried wrapping the marinated beef ribs and side dishes in fresh lettuce. I think ribs taste best when eaten as a generous lettuce wrap like this. With the fresh taste of lettuce added, I enjoyed a full, satisfying bite.

Hearty doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew)

Doenjang jjigae with mushrooms and vegetables

After eating a good amount of meat, we also ordered doenjang jjigae. It was packed with mushrooms and vegetables, and the broth was savory. After eating meat, a warm spoonful of doenjang jjigae really hit the spot. When the doenjang jjigae at a BBQ place is good, it raises the whole meal's satisfaction, and this one was quite good too. Recommended if you want to finish the meal heartily with rice.

Dongchimi guksu mari: chilled noodles that paired well with the ribs

Noodles and yeolmu picked up from the dongchimi guksu mari

And the dish that was better than expected was the dongchimi guksu mari. The cool dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth with chewy noodles and crunchy yeolmu (young radish greens) cleaned the palate nicely after the marinated beef ribs.

Picking up the noodles together with the long yeolmu strips was crunchy and refreshing. The tangy, clean broth paired especially well with the sweet marinated beef ribs.
