Charcoal pork ribs in Gwangju, Gyeonggi: Jeongwon Galbi
In short
Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch is a grilled-meat restaurant in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, serving handmade Korean pork ribs over charcoal. After a short wait, I enjoyed marinated crab side dishes, doenjang-jjigae, and steamed egg across its spacious two-floor dining room. Verdict: the not-too-sweet ribs and generous self-service bar were especially good.

I visited while looking for delicious pork ribs in Gwangju, Gyeonggi. Maybe because it is such a popular local restaurant, there was a bit of a wait, so I entered my details into the waiting machine outside and went in after a short wait.

A spacious, comfortable restaurant with parking
It is spacious and comfortable, making it great for group gatherings too. Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch (정원갈비 경기광주점) is quite large—so large that it is split across the first and second floors!
Free parking is available in front of the restaurant.
Inside

The tables are generously spaced, so it is great for family visits, and I heard it is also popular for group meals with several people.
Complimentary side dishes with marinated raw crab

Look at this! They even serve yangnyeom gejang (marinated raw crab) as a complimentary side dish. The banchan (Korean side dishes) spread was wonderfully substantial.
When you keep eating meat, it can get a little repetitive, but it was nice to have a variety of side dishes to eat alongside it.

How were the Korean pork ribs?
Korean pork ribs: 250 g for ₩15,900. These are handmade Korean pork ribs that are even tastier because they are not overly sweet.
The marinade is so important for pork ribs, and this place had both delicious Korean pork ribs and a great marinade—it was honestly perfect for the first time in a while! You can tell how good they are just by looking at that color. And they are Korean pork, so that says it all.

The neatly arranged marinated ribs looked so enticing that I was excited before even taking a bite. They say looks are everything... and after one bite, I totally got it!
There is a reason people wait to eat here. It truly tastes like a Gwangju, Gyeonggi restaurant worth waiting for!!

Dessert doenjang-jjigae and steamed egg
Dessert doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew), ₩3,000. A bowl of house-made doenjang-jjigae!

Since it is a dessert menu item, the portion is not overwhelming—just right for wrapping up a meal. A spoonful of savory doenjang-jjigae with rice is the perfect finish after meat.

Steamed egg, ₩5,000. It is a steamed egg dish everyone, adults and children alike, will enjoy; the children's version contains no vegetables or red pepper powder!!

As the menu explains, the children's steamed egg has no red pepper powder, while the adult version includes it for a lightly spicy touch.
It may seem like no big deal, but this really was the flavor kick!!! I highly recommend the adult steamed egg.

I absolutely loved that the pork ribs were not the kind that are just excessively sweet. The marinade had soaked in well, so once grilled, they had sweet, salty, savory flavor with an extra hit of charcoal smokiness—what more is there to say?

Everyone knows pork ribs are even better grilled over charcoal, right?! The pork ribs infused with charcoal aroma had their savory flavor turned up and tasted wonderfully rich.

The meat itself was tender too, so it paired beautifully with rice. It is exactly the flavor kids will definitely love—but one this adult loves too.

The marinated ribs and sweet-tangy pickled onions are such a great match, so please try them together. They were so good that I went back for more at the self-service bar.

The ssam vegetables were fresh too, so I recommend enjoying the meat with fresh greens as well!

Since they are marinated ribs, they can burn easily. After grilling, there is a separate place to set the meat, so I could keep it warm and delicious without burning it until the very end!
A self-service bar for whatever you need

It is quietly disappointing when you run short of side dishes while eating meat, but with the self-service bar, you can take as much as you need without feeling self-conscious.

Even the maesil-cha (Korean plum tea) provided by the exit made this Gwangju, Gyeonggi restaurant feel perfect right through to the finish.
