A charcoal-grill restaurant in Cheongna with your dog

Friends, don’t we all have those days when we want to gently tip back a glass of soju with fragrant pork belly kissed by charcoal smoke? >_<?? Not long ago, Naji and I were out and about in Cheongna when we heard about a place serving high-quality Korean pork belly grilled over patented clean charcoal—and dogs were welcome too—so we hurried right over ♥️ You can park beside the restaurant, the dining room is large and pleasant, and there are even group rooms. Let me give you the full, honest scoop on Gamgol Yeontan-jip Cheongna Branch (감골연탄집 청라점), a Cheongna meat restaurant that would work just as well for a group get-together or company dinner!

Charcoal briquette model at the Gamgol Yeontan-jip entrance

As you would expect from a charcoal-grill specialist, Gamgol Yeontan-jip Cheongna Branch even had a huge charcoal briquette model at the entrance 🫢 The little wisps of smoke rising from it made it look so real, right???? They also provide service according to your waiting time. We arrived late, after the usual meal rush, and got in straight away—but their generosity with the service was enough that I wouldn’t have regretted waiting ❣️

When you think of charcoal grilling, you might hesitate to bring a dog because of smoke and smells. But Gamgol Yeontan-jip was incredibly spacious and clean inside, without smoke or odors, so it was such a comfortable place to visit with a dog 👍 Looking around, I also spotted spaces divided into private rooms, making it an ideal spot for group gatherings or company dinners too 👍👍

I wondered why it was so clean without that harsh smoke, and apparently it is because they use patented clean charcoal with no hydrogen sulfide!! The charcoal heat was incredibly strong too 🔥🔥

Korean pork belly and a generous table of sides

Gimgol Yeontan-jip Cheongna Branch uses only carefully selected top-grade Korean pork, even among Grade 1 Korean pork!!! How could I not try the pork belly after hearing that? 😝😝 Pork belly, immediately❣️

Ordered pork belly and grill

They brought us wonderfully chilled heotgae tea (oriental raisin tree tea) for water 👍 The table was completely set as soon as we ordered, with big pieces of kimchi and green-onion kimchi. You know those absolutely have to go on the grill, right? Hahaha. Sweet-potato salad, pickled chili peppers, and assorted sauces were all served hygienically in individual portions 💕

I finished a bite of sweet-potato salad and scurried off for more ❣️

Thick-cut Korean pork belly

Maybe because it was truly top-quality Korean pork, everything from the color and thickness to the marbling felt noticeably different 😲 As the meat turned golden over the charcoal, the delicious aroma filled the air 🥺💕

Doenjang-jjigae with crab and clams

We also ordered a hearty doenjang-jjigae (soybean-paste stew) as a side! It was a little more expensive than the usual side stew at a meat restaurant, so I wondered what it would be like—but the moment it arrived, I completely understood hahaha. This was not a side dish; it was a proper meal in itself 🫢🫢

It came in a large earthenware pot and was so generous, packed with refreshing blue crab, clams, and plenty of tofu. It had a deep, rich flavor that was a bit like ge-gukji, a crab kimchi stew 🦀 The broth was so spicy and profound that one stew alone could make two bowls of rice disappear in no time 🥹 If you come to Gamgol Yeontan-jip in Cheongna, this doenjang-jjigae is a must!!!!

Grilled pork belly dipped in sesame oil

I dipped a well-grilled piece of pork belly into sesame oil with salt, and the outside was crisp while the inside burst with juices—the height of savory goodness 🤤💕 They also had an unusual basil ssamjang (seasoned soybean dipping paste). I tried it out of curiosity, and it was completely charming ♥️ It may be a little polarizing, but I was firmly on the love-love-love side 👍

A tip for bringing your dog before ordering charcoal bulgogi

I also made proper lettuce wraps with the pork belly—something you simply cannot skip 🥬 The pork belly was so good that I considered sticking with it all the way, but the charcoal bulgogi grilling at the next table looked so delicious that I found myself completely enchanted and ordering more.. 🐷🐷

Extra order of charcoal bulgogi

We had stopped by while out for a walk today, so we did not bring a stroller, but I recommend one if you are coming with a dog!! The charcoal heat is strong, and a carrier placed on a chair could get hot from the heat 🔥🔥

The owner came over and placed the charcoal bulgogi, thoroughly coated in a sweet and spicy marinade, right on the grill 🔥 Since charcoal bulgogi needs to be stirred often so it does not burn, we kept turning it over—and every stir infused it with that charcoal aroma. The smell as it cooked was honestly insane... 👍

I piled the beautifully browned charcoal bulgogi onto lettuce with one sharp little piece of garlic, and... this is truly a flavor anyone would go crazy for, no matter their preferences 😭 The sweet-spicy seasoning, gentle charcoal fragrance, and punchy garlic created an explosion of umami. Even though I was full, I could not stop reaching for my chopsticks at this Cheongna meat restaurant 🥹🥹

Omija and maesil slushies for dessert

And the detail that made me think Gamgol Yeontan-jip in Cheongna was so thoughtful was the dessert slushies 🥤 They had two flavors, omija (five-flavor berry) and maesil (Korean green plum), so we happily had one each. They washed away the lingering grease from the meat and left our mouths feeling completely refreshed 🥹👍💕

From the juicy quality of top-grade Korean pork and the incredible doenjang-jjigae broth loaded with crab, to charcoal bulgogi with that nostalgic smoky aroma, the comfort of dining with a beloved dog, and a refreshing slushy dessert—everything was satisfying. A genuinely great Cheongna restaurant, approved ❤️ If you are looking for retro-style charcoal grilling in Cheongna, or want to enjoy quality Korean pork with your beloved pet, head to Gamgol Yeontan-jip! I can confidently recommend this dog-friendly Cheongna restaurant 😎
