Whenever sushi crosses your mind, you always end up agonizing over where to go, right? Fresh fish, a decent price, and a generous spread would be even better. Hwangje Sushi (황제초밥), which I visited near Western Dome in Ilsan, left me so satisfied that I can recommend it with confidence. The value is great and the lineup is solid too, so I want to go back. If you love sushi, saving this place won't disappoint you, haha.
What are the exterior and atmosphere of Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch like?
The moment I arrived in front of Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch, it felt like a small sushi shop in Japan. The signboard was neat and the vibe wasn't overbearing, so it was easy to walk in. Because it isn't over the top, the local Japanese feel actually came through more.
It was pretty for photos and a nice atmosphere for a date. It's also easy to find even for first-time visitors, so access is good.
White-toned interior and table spacing

Inside, the whole place was clean and really well kept. The white-toned interior made it look much more spacious, and the tables were spaced comfortably, so eating was easy. There were solo diners, families and couples, and everyone seemed to be eating comfortably!
The staff were friendly too, so we could start the meal in a good mood.

Two 10P assorted sushi sets, with abalone porridge and grilled salmon as standard
At Hwangje Sushi we ordered two sets of assorted sushi, 10 pieces each.

The standard lineup is exactly why I was so happy here. We had only just ordered when warm abalone porridge (jeonbok-juk) came out first. It was soft and nutty, and it settled my stomach before the meal. The grilled salmon also comes as standard, golden outside and moist inside, good enough to count as a main dish.
How was the assorted sushi at Hwangje Sushi?
When the assorted sushi we'd been waiting for finally arrived, it looked really appetizing. Just from the photo you can feel the freshness. The fish had a lively sheen and the rice portions were just right for one bite.
The udon that comes alongside had a clean, refreshing broth and went really well with the sushi.

The fried croquette was crispy outside and moist inside, the kind of thing kids would love!

Flatfish and salmon sushi
The first piece, flatfish (gwangeo, similar to halibut), was light with a lovely chewy texture. A faint sweetness came through, making it a perfect first bite.
The salmon sushi had a thick slice of salmon, and a rich, oily flavor filled my mouth. There was no fishiness at all and it was really fresh. The second salmon piece also had just the right amount of fat and a melt-in-your-mouth texture that was the best.

Shrimp and tuna sushi
The shrimp sushi kept its springy texture and was mild, a flavor anyone would like. So sweet and lovely!

The tuna sushi had an impressive melt-in-your-mouth texture and the savory depth lingered. I love tuna so much that this was one of the pieces I enjoyed most.

Torched cream salmon sushi
The salmon sushi topped with cream paired really well, with smooth cream and salmon and a richer flavor overall. It was lightly torched, which doubled the nutty taste and made it even better.

Finishing with beef sushi
The beef sushi had a subtle smoky, flame-grilled aroma, which gave it a different kind of charm. When you eat a sushi platter, finishing with one piece of beef sushi like this is a real treat. It feels like a hearty finish!
For every piece, the ratio of rice to fish was so good that I never got tired of it to the end. The wasabi wasn't overdone either, so I could really taste the ingredients themselves. It felt fresh all the way through, a really satisfying meal, haha.
Is Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch worth a return visit?

I'm 100 percent going back. At Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch, the price, taste and service all left me satisfied. The standard lineup alone is plenty, and the sushi quality is good on top of that, so I felt it's a place with outstanding value. If you're looking for good sushi near Western Dome, I recommend visiting Hwangje Sushi at least once.

It's good for a light meal, and a date or a family dinner out would both work, so I recommend it with confidence!!
