Tareudang giant fruit mochi in Hwangnidang-gil, Gyeongju

Every time I go to Gyeongju there's some new dessert, and this time I took home Tareudang's giant fruit mochi! 🥝 They work as a Gyeongju souvenir or gift, and they're just right for treating yourself too 💜

What is Tareudang in Gyeongju's Hwangnidang-gil?

Tareudang storefront in the center of Hwangnidang-gil

Tareudang is a takeout dessert shop almost in the center of Hwangnidang-gil, at 49 Sajeong-ro (사정로 49). Apparently tourists and locals both come here. I visited at an in-between time on a weekday, so luckily there was no wait, but I'd brace for a line on weekends. It's mostly takeout, so you can pick up right after ordering, which was fast and nice.

Egg tarts and butter tteok behind the Tareudang counter

Behind the counter I spotted egg tarts and butter tteok (chewy butter rice cake). They're big, yet priced around ₩2,000–₩3,000, so it's good quality for the money.

How to store Tareudang giant fruit mochi

Tareudang storage instructions for giant fruit mochi

The shop kindly posts instructions: eat the mochi the same day, and after that always freeze it, for up to 2 weeks. Thawed for 30 minutes to 1 hour from frozen, it's apparently perfect as an ice mochi. The mochi are huge and packed with cream, so a firmer cream would definitely be easier to eat.

Oversized takeout container holding four giant fruit mochi

I picked four giant fruit mochi to go, and the packaging was giant too, hahaha. The owner is a man, and even so the container is bigger than his hand.

Tareudang menu and the 4-or-more discount

Tareudang menu board with giant fruit mochi, tarts and butter tteok

The signature item is the giant fruit mochi, made with fruits like mango, gold kiwi, melon and pineapple, plus seasonal additions (strawberry). The tarts are egg tart and cheesecake tart, each available plain or topped with fruit. And on top of that, the trendy chewy butter tteok! You could probably get all your Hwangnidang-gil dessert takeout done at Tareudang 😉

You can see the whole menu and the prices from outside, so ordering is easy. Buy 4 or more and each one is ₩500 off, so if you're getting takeout or souvenirs anyway, 4 or more is the better deal, haha.

Why skip the mango mochi line in 37°C heat?

Tareudang giant fruit mochi carried home in a cooler bag

I wanted the mango mochi, but they said it would take 7 minutes, so I gave up and bought other flavors. In 37°C weather I can't last even 3 minutes... Instead, I carried the mochi home in the cooler bag I'd prepared beforehand 😋

Tareudang giant fruit mochi: 4 flavors compared

Pineapple mochi (5,500 won)

Palm-size Tareudang pineapple mochi

The pineapple mochi is ₩5,500, a kind price that doesn't match its size 👍 It's a giant mochi about the size of an adult woman's palm, so one per person is just right. This is the tangy-sweet pineapple one I took home instead of mango.

Cross-section of mochi with pineapple pieces and thick cream

Inside are 2–3 big pineapple pieces, so you taste pineapple in every bite. The cream filling isn't whipped cream but something thicker and heavier, with a taste like cream cheese or mascarpone mixed in.

Tareudang gold kiwi mochi

Gold kiwi mochi (5,500 won)

The gold kiwi mochi is also ₩5,500. Of course Tareudang uses only fresh fruit! Gold kiwi is reliably sweet, so this was one of the flavors I was most looking forward to.

Cross-section of gold kiwi mochi with whole kiwi and red bean

I never expected a whole gold kiwi inside 🤤 There's red bean paste underneath, and with such big fruit it seemed to have less cream than the pineapple mochi. But that actually suited the gold kiwi better! The sweetness peaked and it made me happy.

Tareudang thick Greek Shine Muscat mochi

Rich Greek yogurt Shine Muscat mochi (6,500 won)

The thick Greek Shine Muscat mochi (꾸덕그릭샤인모찌) is ₩6,500, and true to its name it was the thickest and tangiest Shine Muscat grape mochi. Mixed with Greek yogurt, it's mainly fresh and tangy.

Cross-section of Shine Muscat mochi packed with cream

Shine Muscat grapes are small, so this had the most cream of the four. As a cream lover, I loved it, haha. The mochi is super soft and floppy, like melted cheese or flowing batter. It's more soft and gooey than chewy, which actually blended well with the cream.

Tareudang musk melon mochi

Musk melon mochi (6,500 won)

The musk melon mochi is ₩6,500. Why is this the only one with no fruit on top? Did they run out, haha. It's a sweet cream mochi with musk melon inside.

Cross-section of musk melon mochi with half fruit, half cream

This one had exactly half fruit, half cream! With no red bean, the finish was cleaner. It's light, so it works well as a after-meal dessert.
