Birthday lunch spot near Anguk Station: Beef Wellington, Concasse

In short

Concasse Anguk is a Western restaurant in a hanok (traditional Korean house) more than 100 years old, a 3-minute walk from Anguk Station Exit 2 in Jongno, Seoul. For a friend's birthday, the writer booked a weekday lunch at Concasse Anguk and ordered Beef Wellington at 53,000 won, fresh lasagna at 23,000 won and two glasses of house red wine at 9,000 won each, for a total of 94,000 won for two. With dishes by a chef featured on Korean TV as a master of Beef Wellington and lasagna, served in a quiet hanok, Concasse Anguk is an easy pick for a birthday or anniversary meal.

Today I went to Anguk Station to celebrate my friend's birthday. We visited Concasse, famous around Anguk both as a pasta spot and a Beef Wellington spot. It was my first time ever trying Beef Wellington, and both my friend and I were genuinely moved by it — I hope you all get to feel that too, haha. Concasse is actually the place that appeared on the TV show 'Master of Living' as the master of Beef Wellington!

Inside the 100-year-old hanok: atmosphere and seating

We made a reservation for weekday lunch. Even on a weekday afternoon, quite a few groups were already gathered there. For weekends, I'd recommend checking the waiting status on Catch Table before you go.

A tree inside the restaurant with sunlight coming through the window

Concasse Anguk is set in a hanok over 100 years old, with a striking tree standing tall inside the restaurant. The sunlight pouring in through the windows felt so nice, and the greenery gave off a really lovely mood. The interior felt upscale, making it a great choice for a date or an anniversary too.

Group seating at Concasse Anguk

They also had good group seating. It seemed perfect for wedding invitation meetups or gatherings with friends! The seats and chairs were quite comfortable too.

Bonsai and potted plant decor placed in the restaurant

Every little decor piece felt upscale — the bonsai, the potted plants, even the lighting, haha.

The atmosphere a Korean hanok gives off really is something else.

In particular, the chef at Concasse Anguk appeared on 'Master of Living' as a master of both Beef Wellington and lasagna. The restroom was also very clean.

This is the menu board at Concasse's second location, Anguk. They say they make everything with good-quality ingredients for their Western dishes. Their signature menu items are pasta, Beef Wellington, and lasagna.

Besides lasagna and Beef Wellington, there was a wide variety of dishes like fresh pasta and risotto. They also had a large selection of wines and upscale liquors.

  • Order for two
  • Beef Wellington ₩53,000
  • Fresh lasagna ₩23,000
  • House red wine ₩9,000 × 2
  • Total ₩94,000

We ordered their best-selling fresh lasagna and the Beef Wellington — a classic British dish and Concasse's signature menu item — along with the house red wine, which pairs perfectly with beef!

How did the Beef Wellington, fresh lasagna and red wine taste?

Table setting with house red wine and fresh lasagna

The house red wine and fresh lasagna came out first. The wine had just the right sweetness and a nice aroma.

Fresh lasagna topped with arugula

The fresh lasagna combined tomato sauce with a creamy sauce really well, and it was topped generously with arugula.

I love arugula and my friend doesn't, so I ended up eating all of it, haha ><

Cross-section of the fresh lasagna after a bite was taken

Since it's fresh pasta, the texture was great and it was easy on the stomach too. If you love lasagna, you have to order this.

Next up, the Beef Wellington. I'd only ever seen Beef Wellington made by Gordon Ramsay lol — actually eating something I'd only seen on TV was such a novelty. It was my first time trying Beef Wellington, and doing it at Concasse made it even more special.

Can you see the texture of the beef inside? The doneness was perfect and the presentation was amazing!!!! The perilla leaves layered in between were exactly suited to a Korean palate, haha. And here's my friend kindly cutting it for me, haha.

The potato purée underneath the deep, rich Wellington paired beautifully with the peas, small onions, and tomatoes served alongside.

It went really well with the house red wine. I was so glad we came for my friend's birthday. The atmosphere was never noisy overall, so we got to spend a good long while enjoying our time there.

Final verdict: is Concasse Anguk right for a birthday or anniversary?

My first-ever Beef Wellington, a beautifully plated fresh lasagna, and a quality house red wine made for a perfect lunch. With its 100-year-old hanok interior and great location, it's a Western restaurant well worth visiting for a birthday or anniversary. If you're trying to decide where to go for lunch or dinner near Anguk Station, I'd strongly recommend Concasse's second location 🖤
