What kind of place is Oneuldo Utja Chowol?

The Chowol branch of Oneuldo Utja is a kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and duruchigi (spicy stir-fried pork) restaurant that uses aged kimchi and Korean pork! The kimchi jjigae is sooo good, seriously T_T And since the rice comes as pot rice, it's already famous as a Chowol Station go-to spot!!!

Chowol Sports Town is nearby, so working out hard and then having kimchi jjigae with egg roll here sounds like pure happiness 👍👍👍 Hwadamsup (a forest garden) isn't far either, so it would be a good addition to your itinerary.

How does the wait at Oneuldo Utja Chowol work?

There is a wait at Oneuldo Utja Chowol. You write your name and wait outside, and a staff member calls your name. Yep... there's a wait..!!!! Still, I went fairly early so we got in quickly haha

It's one menu item per person! You need to order rice for everyone in your group to be able to get extra rice haha

What did we order at Oneuldo Utja Chowol?

Here's the menu at Oneuldo Utja Chowol~ I ordered the squid pork duruchigi, the giant egg roll (gyeran-mari) and pot rice!

Side dishes and the self-bar

The side dishes at Oneuldo Utja Chowol are cucumber, chili pepper, garlic and dried radish strips.

The cucumber was crunchy and fresh, and it really got my appetite going haha

You can grab more side dishes at the self-bar.

There are onions too.

Extra rice is set out next to the self-bar! You can only get more if you ordered rice for everyone in your group.

There's even a pot rice corner off to one side haha

They bring ssam (leaf wraps) to the table too.

How were the portion and flavor of the squid pork duruchigi?

The squid pork duruchigi at Oneuldo Utja Chowol is an insane amount of food... There's minari (water dropwort) on top, and underneath it's packed with bean sprouts, enoki mushrooms, squid and pork.

The vegetables were so fresh and clean that I just wanted to dig in right away. The bean sprouts are really plump, and the minari was super fresh too.

Staff flip the duruchigi for you

The staff told us to leave it alone because they'd flip it for us. It comes to a boil quickly haha It definitely looks hard to flip in one go. There's really a lot of it..!!

Look at the size of the squid. So plump and hearty T_T

Even the legs are plump and tender.

I lifted up just what was visible and it's already a heap, and there's loads more spread under the vegetables and kimchi.

How were the pot rice and giant egg roll?

The pot rice at Oneuldo Utja Chowol came out together with the duruchigi. The rice was really well done, and they say they use Suhyangmi rice; the shine and aroma are no joke haha

The giant egg roll came out quickly too, and it's huge..!!!

The seasoning is just right, so it goes perfectly with the duruchigi. Duruchigi and egg roll are a match made in heaven haha It's a fluffy, crumbly egg roll haha

Finishing with ssam and nurungji

I took a bite of the squid too. The chew is no joke.

I also tried wrapping it in the onions from the self-bar.

Piling every ingredient into a wrap is pure honey haha

I kept grabbing squid and pork in a total trance. Even the nurungji (scorched rice) made it a perfect meal haha Pot rice, duruchigi and egg roll, it's all just perfect T_T

I finished the meal by putting squid on the nurungji. Now I get why it's a top spot in Chowol-eup T_T It's so good..!!!

Is Oneuldo Utja Chowol worth the wait?

If you're looking for a restaurant near Gonjiam, give Oneuldo Utja Chowol a visit. Besides the taste, they use fresh, good ingredients, so there's no reason not to go! It's close to Hwadamsup too, so it's a great place to eat after enjoying the autumn leaves haha I stumbled into a Chowol local favorite by chance and was totally satisfied; it's worth the wait. If you're looking for a Gwangju, Gyeonggi restaurant or a Chowol-eup restaurant, definitely stop by!!!
