Squid ink pasta and cheese fries in Suwan, Gwangju: Suwanjigu Form

In short

Suwanjigu Form is a pasta and wine restaurant on Suwan-ro 10beon-gil in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. On this daytime visit the order was cheese-loaded French fries with a cream pasta and a squid ink pasta, eaten one after the other. The mild cream and the briny seafood ink go in completely different directions, which makes the two plates a good pair for two people to share.

I was looking for somewhere to eat pasta in Suwan when I came across Form, which looked like it had a nice atmosphere too. I like pasta in general, so I end up at Western restaurants around Suwan pretty often. This time I got to try both cream pasta and squid ink pasta, so I went in with high expectations. Turned out the interior was just as impressive as the food, so let me walk through it one thing at a time.

Where is Suwanjigu Form in Suwan, Gwangju, and what does it look like?

Suwanjigu Form is at 94 Suwanro 10beon-gil, 1st floor, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. When you arrive, the sign reading "fo.m" catches your eye first.

Brick exterior and sign of Suwanjigu Form with large glass windows

Brick walls, large glass windows, and brown curtains come together to give the exterior a different feel from a typical Western restaurant. Under the entrance there's a long row of wine bottles on display, so it feels like a restaurant and a wine bar at once.

Entrance to Form with olive tree pot and wine bottles

Closer to the entrance there's an olive-tree-like potted plant and a small green foam decoration. Several wine bottles lined up under the window also suited the mood of Form well. Rather than overdo the decor, they used color and small props for accents, giving it a bit of an emotional feel.

Interior with deep green walls and wood-toned tables

Inside, wood-toned tables and rattan-style chairs were set up neatly. The walls were a deep green, giving the whole space a calm feel, and even the tableware on the tables was tidy — a good first impression. It's a place you could bring a friend for a casual meal, or come for a slow conversation over dinner for two.

What is on the Suwanjigu Form menu, and which wines are poured?

The Suwanjigu Form menu was built around pasta but also offered a range of small dishes and mains. Vongole pasta, fish roe pasta, ragu pasta, and cream pasta were all on the menu, each with its own style.

There were also steaks and dishes using seasonal ingredients, so instead of just ordering one pasta, it was a menu that worked well for sharing several dishes.

Store notice about using seasonal ingredients

When I visited, there was also a separate summer seasonal menu. Made with ingredients suited to the season, it felt different from the regular menu, and I liked that the lineup changes with the seasons. If you're someone who visits Suwan restaurants often, it seems like there'd be fun in trying something new each time the season changes.

On the table there was also a note about the ingredients Form uses and how the restaurant operates. It said they visit the dawn market every day to personally source seasonal ingredients, aiming for same-day production and same-day use. So if ingredients run out early, some menu items may not be available — worth keeping in mind if there's something specific you want to eat.

It also said the food is developed with pairing in mind for drinks, and if you don't know much about wine, you can ask the staff for a recommendation — which makes it easy to enjoy wine alongside food that suits it.

Wine list showing red and white wines

There was also a separate wine list. It ranged from red and white wines to beer and regular drinks. Each wine came with its variety and characteristics noted, so if you're someone who regularly enjoys wine, it would be easy to pick something to your taste. It felt like the kind of Suwan Western restaurant that suits a slow meal with pasta and wine.

The inside of the restaurant was also decorated cohesively in deep green and wood tones. There was an open kitchen and bar area visible too — even visiting during the day the atmosphere was good, so I imagine it feels different again in the evening. If atmosphere matters as much as the food when you're looking for good pasta in Suwan, this interior is definitely a plus.

How do the cheese French fries, cream pasta and squid ink pasta taste?

The first thing to arrive at the table at Suwanjigu Form was French fries loaded with cheese. Golden fried potatoes topped generously with cheese — it looked delicious from the start.

A plate of French fries piled high with cheese

They were great to pick at one by one while waiting for the pasta, salty and savory enough that I kept reaching for more.

Cheese fries dipped into sauce

I also tried them dipped in the sauce that came with them, which gave a softer, richer taste compared to eating them plain. I had ordered it lightly as a side dish, but the portion was generous enough to share among several people.

A side dish of vegetables served mid-meal

Partway through, some vegetables came out to eat alongside. After the rich flavors of pasta and fries, having these in between cleaned the palate. It wasn't just the main dishes that were thought through — this kind of accompaniment made the whole meal flow well.

Cream pasta topped with mushrooms and asparagus

Cream pasta at Suwanjigu Form

The cream pasta I'd been waiting for arrived next. It came generously topped with mushrooms, asparagus, and cheese. The sauce coated the noodles evenly, and with so many ingredients mixed in, the plate looked quite full. The soft cream sauce combined with the texture of the mushrooms and asparagus meant it never felt one-note all the way through.

Noodles lifted up showing the cream sauce coating them

Lifting up the noodles, the cream sauce came up naturally with them. The savory cheese flavor worked well too, and the texture shifted a bit each time I ate the ingredients along with the noodles. If you're looking for good pasta in Suwan and like a soft, savory style, this is a dish worth trying.

A plate of black squid ink pasta with seafood

Next came the squid ink pasta, with its jet-black noodles catching the eye immediately. It looked completely different from the cream pasta, with seafood and sauce mixed around the noodles giving the single plate real presence. Ordering two pastas with different styles meant more fun going back and forth between them than sticking to just one dish.

Deep black squid ink noodles lifted up

Lifting up the ink noodles showed off the deep black color even more. Rather than eating the noodles alone, it worked better to eat them together with the seafood and sauce around them. Where the cream pasta was soft and savory, the squid ink pasta felt more distinctive with the seafood in it. If you're visiting as a couple, ordering different dishes and sharing a plate each seems like a good approach.

A cool dessert served after the meal

After the meal, a cool dessert came out. After dishes as rich as the pasta and fries, finishing with a cold dessert felt refreshing. From the first dish to the last dessert, everything flowed naturally, and the whole meal felt well put together.

A bar area with various wine glasses set out

There was also a separate wine fridge on one side of the restaurant, along with various types of glasses set out — a sign that Form is a space for enjoying food and wine together, not just pasta on its own. Next time I'd like to visit in the evening and pair the pasta or another dish with wine.

Honest thoughts after a daytime meal at Suwanjigu Form

Before leaving, I noticed several Blue Ribbon stickers by the entrance. Stickers for 2024, 2025, and even 2026 were lined up side by side, showing this is a place that's kept its name on the list consistently.

Having visited and eaten here myself, it's a place where the variety of pasta as well as the atmosphere and menu lineup come together well. In particular, having a menu that uses seasonal ingredients along with wine to enjoy alongside it made it feel a bit different from a typical pasta place.

This time I tried the French fries, cream pasta, and squid ink pasta together, and since they pointed in different flavor directions, they were good to eat back and forth. Among restaurants in Suwan, this would make a solid choice for a date-friendly atmosphere or a place to sit slowly with a friend. If you're craving good pasta in Suwan and want the atmosphere to match, Form is worth keeping in mind as an option.
