Jongno 3-ga bakery: quartered coffee bread and mugwort bread, Munhwa
In short
Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only neighborhood bakery on Donhwamun-ro, between Jongno 3-ga Station and Ikseon-dong in Jongno, Seoul. Because the shop is small, only two parties go in at a time, but a weekday afternoon visit meant walking straight in and picking up mugwort rice cake bread and coffee bread, the latter already cut into quarters and wrapped. The coffee bread had a slightly crisp mocha-bun crust with a moist center, and the mugwort flavor was deep enough to bring Munhwa Bakery a return visit.

Munhwa Bakery Hours: 11:00–20:00 Takeout-only shop

Today I'm writing about my visit to Munhwa Bakery, a well-known bakery in Ikseon-dong. I'd always been curious about it walking by, and this time I finally had the time to stop in!

Munhwa Bakery admits 2 parties at a time — no wait on a weekday afternoon
The inside of Munhwa Bakery is pretty small, so only 2 parties can be inside at once. Luckily I came on a weekday afternoon and got in right away!

Once inside, there's really just enough space to stand and pick bread, plus the bread shelves and the register. Being a takeout-only spot, the shop itself is quite small. Right in front are trays of bread, and I liked that each one was individually wrapped in plastic — nice and hygienic! The smell of fresh bread was so good too. The shop's vibe wasn't overly flashy — more of a warm, tidy neighborhood bakery feel, which made it even more endearing.

What kinds of bread does Munhwa Bakery sell?
Here's the lineup: injeolmi (sweet rice cake) bread, peanut bread, mugwort rice cake bread, cheese bread, black sesame bread, milk cream bread, squid ink condensed milk bread, onion bagel, sweet potato bread, white bean paste bread, walnut bread, rice chestnut loaf, chestnut cheese loaf, maple cream cheese bread, coffee bread, and even garlic bread! Small shop, but a really solid lineup. What stood out most was how kindly the owner helped me while I was choosing. Even while busy, the friendly smile and attentive service made the whole place stick in my memory as an even better spot, haha.

Free salt bread for a receipt review, and the 'store that saves children' sign
Once I told the owner what I'd picked, they helped package it right away! At checkout I noticed a sign saying you get free salt bread for a receipt review! And there was also a 'store that saves children' sign, which warmed my heart even more. Looking into it, unsold bread apparently goes to people in need — elderly living alone, children without enough to eat, homebound people with disabilities, free meal centers, homeless shelters, and social welfare facilities.

I bought my bread feeling great and headed home! After going back and forth, I picked mugwort rice cake bread and coffee bread~!!

How does the coffee bread taste? Cut into quarters, with a mocha-bun crust
First up, Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread — from the very first bite it was fluffy and chewy and so delicious!!! Even carrying it home in my bag, a pleasant coffee scent kept wafting out, and I think I'll buy this one again next time! Opening the plastic wrap, the bread was already cut into quarters. The outside had a pleasantly soft yet slightly crisp mocha-bun feel, and the inside was moist through and through, no dryness at all... With one bite, the coffee flavor filled my mouth — not overly sweet, not light like instant coffee, but a perfect balance between the bitter edge of real coffee beans and the sweetness of the bread. One bite and I was already cutting the next piece, haha. This would go even better with milk or a latte! Out of everything I bought, this coffee bread gets my number one pick...

Munhwa Bakery's mugwort rice cake bread: deep, old-fashioned flavor
And then the mugwort rice cake bread! It genuinely felt like eating mugwort rice cake in bread form. The mugwort aroma hit hard and deep — not artificial coloring or flavoring, but that fragrant, slightly bitter scent you only get when real, good mugwort is generously ground in! Looking at the cross-section, chewy rice cake was perfectly woven into the bread dough. One bite gave a chewy yet soft bread texture first, then the sticky rice cake came through, spreading mugwort flavor through my whole mouth~ It was almost surprising how seamlessly the rice cake and bread meshed together instead of feeling separate!! Not too sweet, with a mild sweetness and the clean, plain taste of real mugwort shining through — this would suit older folks perfectly, and honestly anyone with old-fashioned taste buds like me can't go wrong here, haha.
A genuinely kind, warm shop — and above all, the bread is delicious: Munhwa Bakery!! I loved everything, the taste and the service both. I think I'll be back again, haha. If you go, definitely try the coffee bread!!!
