Yeoksam hair salon repair straightening and damaged-end trim: Owlly

Owlly Yeoksam Branch is a hair salon on the 2nd floor of a building near Yeoksam Station Exit 1 in Gangnam, Seoul, and was formerly called Eple Hair. Six months after her last straightening perm, the writer's curls had returned and her ends were damaged, so she got a repair straightening perm (bokgu magic) and a trim of the damaged ends at Owlly Yeoksam Branch. One senior stylist handled every step one-on-one with no waiting, making it the fastest straightening she has ever had, and her hair came out silky soft, a very satisfying visit.

Gasan Korean restaurant: spicy-sauce suyuk & yukhoe dinner, Yukhwang

Yukhwang (육향) is a Korean restaurant on the first floor of Hanra One&One Tower Building A in Gasan Digital Complex, Geumcheon, Seoul, serving hanwoo (Korean beef) gomtang, hot pots and yukhoe (seasoned raw beef). Over dinner the blogger shared yukhoe bibimbap, a colorful yukhoe mulhoe (raw beef in cold broth) and plate suyuk (sliced boiled beef) with spicy sauce, and found the portions generous without being heavily seasoned. Yukhwang is worth a visit for yukhoe fans looking for a filling meal in Gasan Digital Complex.

Family Korean BBQ at Balsan Station: tablet side refills, Ihwajeong

Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch is a galbi-focused Korean BBQ restaurant in Gangseo, Seoul, about 150m from Exit 4 of Balsan Station. On a weekend visit the writer had 2 servings of marinated pork (dwaeji yangnyeom-gui) with doenjang stew (soybean paste stew), and liked ordering side-dish refills item by item on the table tablet and having staff grill the pork until it was steak-like. Verdict: Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga is a good Korean BBQ spot near Balsan Station for a family meal with parents.

Rice bowl lunch in Noryangjin before Nodeul Island: Gyudongjip

Gyudongjip Noryangjin Main Branch (규동집 노량진본점) is a Japanese rice bowl restaurant specialising in gyudon (beef bowl), chashu-don (pork bowl) and yukhoe-don (raw beef bowl), about a 5-minute walk from Noryangjin Station Exit 3 in Dongjak, Seoul. Before visiting Nodeul Island, the writer queued via Catch Table for a weekend lunch and ordered the Gyudon Hansang (gyudon set with mini soba, side swapped for a sweet potato cheese croquette) and the sous vide chashu-don set with mini soba; both were generous and not too salty. Gyudongjip Noryangjin Main Branch is an easy pick for a Noryangjin rice bowl meal, whether you're eating alone or on a date.

Yeosu Korean restaurant, three kinds of marinated crab: Yeosu Sekki

Yeosu Sekki is a Korean set-meal restaurant in Yeosu, Jeonnam, a 4–5 minute walk from Yi Sun-sin Square toward Haeyang Park. The writer ordered the set meal for two and got about 22 dishes, including a long grilled whole hairtail, soy-marinated, seasoned and spicy seasoned crab, soy-marinated shrimp, raw fish and spicy raw sole salad. Seafood fills half the table at Yeosu Sekki, making it a good fit for a family meal that tastes like Yeosu.

Sinsa tteokbokki with old-school rice cake skewers: Mil Tteok Factory

Mil Tteok Factory Main Branch (밀떡팩토리 본점) is an instant tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant on basement level 1 of Seongmi Building, about a 7-minute walk from Exit 8 of Sinsa Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Two of us ordered the brisket tteokbokki, a 1L green grape ade, old-school rice cake skewers served off the stick and butter garlic fries with plenty of sauce, and the 1-chili spice level was comfortable even for someone who can't handle heat. Taking turns between the tteokbokki, fries and ade at Mil Tteok Factory made for a filling meal that never got boring.

Cheongdam hair salon steam keratin clinic instead of dye: Beorn Hair

Beorn Hair Cheongdam is a hair salon on the 2nd floor of the Cheongyul Building in Cheongdam, Gangnam, Seoul, near Exit 3-1 of Gangnam-gu Office Station. The writer has curly hair that needs regular magic straightening and was told that dye can fade if straightening follows 2–3 months later. She chose a keratin clinic instead: shampoo, a keratin base, steam heat treatment and a scalp massage in a massage chair. After the Beorn Hair Cheongdam clinic, her hair felt noticeably softer when she washed it the next day.

Rainy weeknight bingsu and tteokbokki truck at Jamsil: Bingdongdaeng

Bingdongdaeng is a bingsu (shaved ice) and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) food truck next to outfield Ticket Booth 1 at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Songpa, Seoul. Before a rainy weeknight game with no time for dinner, the writer bought Bingdongdaeng's strawberry bingsu and ₩7,000 tteokbokki, plus cream shrimp nachos and an Ippeun Yeou Hot Dog bacon corn mayo hot dog from the neighboring trucks. Bingdongdaeng is quick to order near the Jamsil ticket booth, making it a good pick for a hungry weekday game.

Burger joint in Gasan: avocado & double sets at Downtown Gasan Public

Downtown Gasan Public (다운타우너 가산퍼블릭) is a handmade burger restaurant on the first floor of Building A at Public Gasan, near Gasan Digital Complex Station in Geumcheon, Seoul, and it shares its space with Clap Pizza. The writer ordered the avocado set and the Downtown double set for lunch and was happy with the juicy double patties and the avocado, bacon and tomato combination. For a filling handmade burger lunch around Gasan Digital Complex, Downtown Gasan Public is worth a visit.

After-work Korean BBQ date in Sinnonhyeon: doenjang rice finish, Sojei

Sojei Seoul Flagship Store is an old-school Korean BBQ restaurant on Gangnam-daero 114-gil near Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul, specializing in LA-style flower ribs (eorei kkotgalbi) and braised oxtail. A couple visited after the husband's workday and ate 500g of LA flower ribs, a tasting-size braised oxtail, a 2,000 won noodle add-on and doenjang sulbap (soybean-paste rice stew), with staff grilling the meat and explaining how to eat it. Sojei Seoul Flagship Store is a worthwhile change of pace when pork belly and everyday beef start to feel boring.

Anyang Station café: jambon-beurre set & 3-tier bingsu, Saechamcoffee

Saechamcoffee is a brunch and sandwich café on Daengridan-gil in Anyang 3-dong, Anyang, Gyeonggi, near Anyang Station. Around 2pm after lunch, the writer and her husband shared a truffle jambon-beurre sandwich set (americano for 3,000 won extra), an old-style cup bingsu stacked in 3 tiers and a smoothie blended from fresh watermelon. Verdict: Saechamcoffee's rich jambon-beurre, balanced americano and summer watermelon smoothie all satisfied, and its outlet seats make it a good neighborhood café for studying or working.

Sinnonhyeon café, less-sweet matcha cream oat latte: Upper and Under

Upper and Under is a dessert café in the CGV alley off Sinnonhyeon Station Exit 9 in Gangnam, Seoul, occupying an entire building from basement level 1 to the 2nd floor. At Upper and Under the writer ordered a matcha cream oat latte, the summer signature mango bar sherbet latte and a yangzhi ganlu cake: the matcha cream oat latte tasted clean with less syrup, and the mango bar sherbet latte let you enjoy mango three ways. For a less-sweet cream latte or a mango drink in Gangnam, Upper and Under is recommended.
