Boksakkot Pineun Jip (복사꽃피는집) is a barbecue restaurant with about 150 seats in Yuseong, Daejeon, near Sutonggol and the National Cemetery. The writer and their daughter ordered the Sweet BBQ pork rib set for two at Boksakkot Pineun Jip. They ate ribs, handmade wood-fired pizza, rice balls and muksabal (cold acorn jelly soup) at one table, then used the free café in a separate building. Ribs that come cleanly off the bone, a kids room and a large parking lot make Boksakkot Pineun Jip a solid choice for a family meal with children.

Reading café in Yuseong, Daejeon: bookshelves, chimney bread, Luonto

Luonto Sutonggol Branch is a large outdoor café near Sutonggol in Yuseong, Daejeon, spread over three floors (1F to 3F) and best known for its chimney bread (a spiral pastry). Two friends brought their own books and lingered over cinnamon chimney bread, Sangha Farm milk ice cream, an iced Einspänner and a real strawberry latte, and the 2nd floor of Luonto Sutonggol Branch, with its bookshelves and plants, turned out to be a great place to read. If you want a relaxed spot to read with chimney bread, Luonto Sutonggol Branch is a good fit.

Inari sushi near Daejeon City Hall: cut-and-mix tip at Kitsune Yubu

Kitsune Yubu Daejeon Dunsan is an inari sushi (rice in fried tofu pouches) restaurant in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, near City Hall Station, serving pieces about 2.5 times bigger than ordinary inari sushi with 14 toppings to choose from. For a Dunsan-dong lunch the writer ordered the B set (sweet-salty beef belly, tuna mayo and spicy seafood udon) and the Yubu Manse set, and cutting the inari sushi open and mixing it, as a staff member suggested, made it taste much better. Two or three pieces of Kitsune Yubu inari sushi are filling enough, making it an easy lunch pick for eating solo, a date or a family meal.

Yuseong Korean BBQ: family meal on a fat-coated pot lid — Jeonju House

Jeonju House (전주하우스) is a Korean BBQ restaurant serving pot-lid pork belly in Bongmyeong-dong, Yuseong, Daejeon, near Yuseong Oncheon Station. On a weekend family outing the writer ordered 3 servings of fresh pork belly, doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) and rice; the pot lid, coated with pork fat, drained the grease while keeping the meat juicy, and the banchan (side dishes) of pan-fried tofu, grilled pollack, grilled eggplant and pickled onion stood out. With a spacious dining room and generous banchan, Jeonju House is a good fit for family meals with parents or group gatherings.

Daejeon seafood restaurant with private rooms: haemuljjim at Seommaeul

Seommaeul (Seommaeul Agujjim & Nakjibokkeum) is a braised seafood and monkfish restaurant on Yuseong-daero in Yuseong, Daejeon, with private rooms closed off by doors that suit family gatherings. A small haemuljjim (spicy braised seafood) for 40,000 won was plenty to share, with a whole octopus, abalone, shrimp, oysters, gon-i (fish roe) and blue crab, while steamed egg, side dishes and self-serve sikhye (sweet rice drink) took the edge off the heat. For a generous seafood family meal in Daejeon, Seommaeul's small haemuljjim is a safe choice.
