Jecheon pub: butter garlic grilled crab for two at Maeun Gieok

Maeun Gieok (매운기억) Jecheon is a crab-focused pojangmacha-style (Korean street-tent) pub on Doksun-ro 11-gil in downtown Jecheon, Chungbuk. The butter garlic grilled crab (38,000 won), ordered with salt gimbap (seaweed rice roll), came packed with crab meat and plenty of shrimp, and the butter garlic flavor paired surprisingly well with soju. For a crab dish other than the usual spicy marinated crab, the butter garlic grilled crab at Maeun Gieok is a good choice.

Bareun Amso Hanwoo is a good Jecheon spot for a family beef dinner where kids can compare the texture of each cut.

Deojinji Sutbul Galbi, Resom Baegun Branch (더진지 리솜백운점) is a charcoal-grill set-meal restaurant in Baegun-myeon, Jecheon, about a 3-minute drive from Forest Resom. During a one-night stay at Resom, the writer ordered the Set B for two, with Damyang-style charcoal galbi and a 220g Hanwoo tteokgalbi (grilled beef short rib patty), at a discounted 61,000 won. The meat was grilled in the kitchen and served on a mini brazier, with soy-marinated crab, spicy marinated crab and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) as standard sides. Deojinji is a good fit for Resom guests and families with kids who want a generous Korean meal without grilling the meat themselves.

Seomin Makguksu (서민막국수) Jecheon Main Branch is a pure buckwheat makguksu (Korean buckwheat noodle) restaurant on Sungmun-ro in Jecheon, Chungbuk, near the Jecheon express bus terminal. The writer and her husband skipped the busy lunch hour and ordered pure buckwheat cold makguksu, buckwheat makguksu with kodari (semi-dried pollack), yukjeon (pan-fried beef slices) and buckwheat jeonbyeong. The generous kodari, the mild, clean broth and the yukjeon served with seasoned chives stood out. Seomin Makguksu Jecheon Main Branch deserves its crowds.

Nangman Jjajang (낭만짜장) is a Chinese restaurant just below Uirimji Reservoir in Jecheon, Chungbuk, on Uirim-daero 48-gil. On a Jecheon day trip, the blogger arrived for the 10 a.m. opening and ordered cream tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour fried pork) and tray jjajang (black bean noodles), and was happy with the Chungju apple kimchi and free rice.
