Jindotgabi Buljjukkumi Daejeon Hongdo is a restaurant specializing in fire-grilled and iron-plate stir-fried jjukkumi (webfoot octopus) in Hongdo-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, near the Hongdo underpass. The writer ordered the Buljjuchadol Signature set for two (33,000 won), with beef brisket–topped fire octopus, black tiger shrimp tempura and a free opening-event whole-shrimp seafood pancake, and found the smoky fire flavor and savory depth convincing. For a 4,000 won difference from the regular set, the brisket-topped Buljjuchadol set at Jindotgabi Buljjukkumi Daejeon Hongdo comes strongly recommended.

anc. Tanbang (앤크 탄방점) is a French dessert bakery café in Tanbang-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, and the second branch after the original in Wolpyeong-dong. The writer visited anc. Tanbang at a quiet weekday hour with her older sister and ordered the Saint-Honoré Americano set, a jambon-beurre baguette, salt bread, a galette bretonne (Breton butter cookie) and a café latte. The caramel-glazed choux on the Saint-Honoré and the crisp, chewy baguette and salt bread made anc. Tanbang especially satisfying.

Songrimbok Jangeo (송림복장어) is an all-you-can-eat freshwater eel restaurant in Jijok-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, where 29,900 won per person (plus a 3,000 won table setting fee) buys unlimited eel, pork belly and chicken neck. Two diners ate 3 to 4 eels and went back for eel and chicken neck refills at least 3 to 4 times, and found the eel plump, free of fishy smell and carefully cleaned of small bones. Verdict: the best hanwoo the writer has eaten in a long while.

Jeonbotdae Sutbul Ogyeop (전봇대 숯불 오겹) is a charcoal BBQ restaurant in Yongun-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, that pre-grills its meat before serving. The pre-grilled pork belly, given a quick extra sear and eaten with roasted gim (seaweed), pollock roe mayo and chili pickles, was the highlight, making Jeonbotdae Sutbul Ogyeop a solid pick for a family meal or company dinner in Yongun-dong.
