Burgiz Daeheung is a new burger restaurant in Jung-gu, Daejeon, right in front of Daejeon Girls' Middle School in Daeheung-dong. The visit covered the avocado burger, bacon cheese burger, and Godfather burger with original fries and San Pellegrino, plus the long communal seating, diagonal table layout, and a sink tucked inside the store. Worth remembering next time a burger craving hits in Daeheung-dong.
Bantiannyao Kaoyu Daejeon Branch is a new mala kaoyu restaurant in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. Two guys ordered the mala flavor with Ningbo fish at basic spice level, added a vegetable-mushroom mix and the self-serve bar for ₩2,000 per person, and left completely full, with staff even deboning the fish for easy eating. Anyone who loves mala tang or hot pot will be satisfied by this tingling, spicy broth dish.
Widaehan Jogae Jeongol is a clam hot pot (jogae jeongol) restaurant in Yongun-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, near Daejeon University. The pot at Widaehan Jogae Jeongol comes loaded with razor clams, scallops, white clams, surf clams, abalone, squid and cheese, and the broth turns deeper and more refreshing the longer it simmers. Macheonchwi is a Chinese restaurant in Mannyeon-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, serving a wide range of Chinese dishes. On this return visit the order was samseon jjamppong (seafood noodle soup in spicy broth, 13,000 won), X.O fried rice (11,000 won) and Peking-style tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork, 18,000 won for the small), eaten in comfort thanks to private rooms, 2-person to group tables, a self-bar and baby chairs. The seafood-packed jjamppong and the tangsuyuk, still chewy and tender even after reheating, were the most satisfying dishes at Macheonchwi.
THE MUA is a handmade Western (European-style) restaurant in Tanbang-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. A married couple whose weekday off finally lined up went for a lunch date and worked through the lunch set — green grape and grapefruit ade, lobster croquette, a salmon dish, and smoky mare pasta. For Western food that is gentle rather than heavy and clearly made with care, THE MUA in Tanbang-dong is the right call.
Ciment Chungnam National University Branch is a casual Western restaurant in Gung-dong, in front of Chungnam National University in Yuseong, Daejeon. Visiting with friends, the writer ordered a half-and-half pizza (potato fry pizza plus bulgogi salad pizza) for 14,000 won, woo samgyeop (thin-sliced beef belly) pilaf for 9,500 won, plum ade for 4,500 won and a zero-sugar cola, and left full in a kitschy American-style dining room. Ciment is worth remembering when you want both value and atmosphere in a university neighborhood.
Imdaejang Daejeon Dunsan Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant near Galleria in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, where a grill expert cooks the pork and brings it to the table on one tray. The medium grilled platter set (₩48,000) with two bowls of rice (₩1,000 each) brought pork belly, pork neck and pork skin to dip in bean powder and a house sauce, plus soft-serve ice cream for dessert. Since nobody has to grill, Imdaejang is an easy pick for a date or a get-together with friends.
Yongja 1 Gwanpyeong Branch is a handmade kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and kimchi dumpling restaurant near the Hyundai Outlet in Gwanpyeong-dong, Yuseong, Daejeon. Arriving for the 11am weekend opening rush, the writer ordered steamed dumplings at 9,000 won and rice cake and dumpling soup at 10,000 won, and both the spicy dumplings packed with kimchi and pork and the savory broth beat expectations. Yongja 1 is an easy, good-value lunch stop, with takeout available too.
Choi Dining Daejeon Gwanpyeong is a Japanese fusion restaurant in Gwanpyeong-dong, Yuseong, Daejeon, about 5 minutes by car from Daejeon Premium Outlets. For lunch before shopping, Couple Set A brought salmon futomaki (5 pieces), maze soba and dontoro-don (pork jowl rice bowl), eaten with the kelp vinegar and truffle mayo combination the owner recommended. The spicy dontoro-don was the standout, making Choi Dining an easy Gwanpyeong-dong lunch stop for casual Japanese food.
Plate is a fresh-noodle pasta restaurant tucked into an alley in Sunhwa-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon, about a 5-minute walk from Jungangno Station. The 14,900 won pasta set adds salad, bread and soup to one pasta, and Plate's bacon cacio e pepe with No. 6 piche noodles and white vongole with No. 3 ink spaghetti both had the chewy, springy bite only fresh noodles give. Being able to pick your own noodle makes Plate an easy recommendation for noodle lovers in Daejeon.
Yongju is a Chinese-style dish-and-drinks bar tucked into a Galma-dong alley in Seo-gu, Daejeon. Turned away by the wait on an earlier try, the writer arrived right at opening to get in first and ordered yeon-saengmaek (draft beer with a shot of Yantai gaoliangju) for 8,000 won, fish-fragrant fried eggplant, nurungji gwabaro for 15,000 won and Biryong egg fried rice for 8,000 won. The cooking at Yongju is properly seasoned rather than salty, making it a solid pick in Galma-dong for both evening get-togethers and drinking alone.
Jeonju House is a Korean restaurant in Bongmyeong-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, serving cast-iron-lid pork belly and kimchi stew. A couple visited for a late weekend lunch past 2pm, ordering two servings of pork belly, a pot of kimchi stew, and finishing with fried rice, with the deep flavor of the restaurant's own homemade aged kimchi standing out most. It's a great match for anyone who loves country-style aged kimchi and handmade side dishes.
