Mamison Hangari BBQ (마미손항아리바베큐) is a Korean BBQ restaurant on Sinjae-ro in Okryong-myeon, Gwangyang, Jeonnam, that specializes in meat smoked over charcoal in clay jars. After a family drive around Okryong, the writer had lunch at Mamison Hangari BBQ with a tomahawk set for 2 booked the day before, a jar galbi (ribs) set and a jar pork belly set, and the 4-year-old was given toddler tableware, seaweed and kids' juice free of charge. The meat was tender enough for a small child and a grandmother with weak teeth, making Mamison Hangari BBQ a good family meal spot in Gwangyang.

Deokeun Jangeo Gwangyang Branch is a charcoal-grilled Pungcheon freshwater eel restaurant in Jungma-dong, Gwangyang, near the Yi Sun-sin Bridge. On a return visit, the writer and a companion ordered the Pungcheon freshwater eel for two (514g) at ₩33,600, an eel tteokgalbi (grilled eel patty) and a flying fish roe rice ball. The order they expected to be two eels turned out to be one large eel, grilled crispy outside and tender inside with no fishy smell. Deokeun Jangeo Gwangyang Branch is a good-value eel restaurant where two people can fill up on grilled eel for around ₩50,000.

Deokeun Jangeo Gwangyang Branch is a charcoal-grill restaurant on Hangman 9-ro in Jungma-dong, Gwangyang, that sells domestic pungcheon eel (freshwater eel) directly. On the first night of a 2-night, 3-day Namhae and Gwangyang trip, we waited about 20 minutes on a Saturday evening, bought eel on the 1st floor and grilled it ourselves over real charcoal on the 2nd floor. My boyfriend, who disliked eel as too greasy, said, 'It's not greasy at all?' With the Yi Sun-sin Bridge night view and a seaside walk afterward, Deokeun Jangeo made a satisfying couple's dinner date in Gwangyang.

Mamison Hangari BBQ is a jar-smoked Korean barbecue restaurant in Ongnyong-myeon, Gwangyang, Jeonnam, about 5 minutes by car from Donggok Valley. A family of three ordered the half-and-half jar set for 3 and ate pork belly, galbi (marinated ribs), grilled rockfish and the owner's homemade side dishes until stuffed, then took home an extra tub of ureong ssamjang (mud snail dipping paste). With generous portions, the owner's home-style cooking and a spacious dining room, Mamison Hangari BBQ is now this family's regular stop after a valley swim.
