Yeast-aged tangsuyuk (large) at a Chimsan-dong restaurant: Cafe Dongyi

In short

Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant on the first floor of Dormitory Building E at Samsung Changjo Campus in Chimsan-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu. On mom's strong recommendation, a family of five arrived right at opening and shared a large Dongyi yeast-aged tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour pork) with four set meals: Grandma's jjukkumi bokkeum (stir-fried baby octopus), two charcoal-grilled jeyuk bokkeum (spicy pork) and charcoal-grilled bulgogi, and the owner brought out a generous bowl of soup just for the child. Between the texture of the tangsuyuk and that thoughtful service, Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch is a 100% revisit.

Hi everyone~ There's a place my mom kept singing praises of every time we visited Daegu — "the tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour pork) here is seriously amazing," she'd say, always begging us to go together. This time, we finally made it happen with my husband, son, sister, and mom all in tow. On mom's strong recommendation, we headed to a Chimsan-dong, Daegu restaurant: Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch.

This Chimsan-dong restaurant sits inside the Samsung Changjo Campus dormitory building, which has a large dedicated parking lot — normally you shouldn't have to worry about parking at all! The day we visited happened to coincide with an event on campus, so the lot was packed. We got lucky and found one last spot. If you're planning to visit on a weekend or during an event, keep this in mind!

Arriving at opening time: no wait, and what the dining room looks like

Mom warned us, "There are always so many people there," so we hurried over for an opening run — and it paid off, no wait at all. The inside of Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch is clean and comfortable overall, with wood-toned interiors that give the space a warm, cozy atmosphere, perfect for a relaxed meal. It was a genuinely comfortable space to visit as a family with a young kid.

A separate bowl of soup brought out just for the child

One thing about this visit really moved me! I was planning to just share my own dish with my little one, but the owner thoughtfully brought out a separate bowl of soup just for the kid! 🥺✨ And it was a generous, hearty portion too, so our little one happily mixed it with rice and ate it right up. The owner clearly understood a mom's heart when bringing a child along and took such careful care of us — it warmed my heart the whole meal.

How is Grandma's jjukkumi bokkeum set meal?

As we chatted away as a family, our ordered dishes finally arrived! Side dishes and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) came along too, making the whole spread feel even more filling.

🐙 Grandma's Jjukkumi Bokkeum Korean set meal The moment it arrived, a subtle char-grilled aroma stirred up our appetite! The octopus wasn't chewy at all — it had a wonderfully springy, tender bite. The sauce was just spicy enough with a hint of sweetness, addictively good, the kind of dish you keep reaching for. (It's also amazing mixed with seaweed and fried egg from the self-serve bar!)

🥩 Dongyi charcoal-grilled jeyuk bokkeum Korean set meal Just the right amount of spice with a savory sweetness — the kind of flavor everyone, regardless of taste, would love. Pile the pork on top of rice and a whole bowl disappears in no time~

🥩 Dongyi charcoal-grilled bulgogi Korean set meal The bulgogi had a nice salty-sweet sauce, and the meat was tender, not dry at all — kept me reaching for more.

🥘 The set meal's finishing touch: hearty doenjang jjigae The doenjang jjigae that came with every Korean set meal was a stroke of genius! The rich, spicy broth cut right through the richness of the meat dishes and paired perfectly, making the whole spread feel complete.

Crispy Dongyi yeast-fermented tangsuyuk (large)

Mom's pick: Dongyi yeast-aged tangsuyuk (large)

The tangsuyuk mom couldn't stop raving about!! Even just looking at it, it seemed impossibly crispy.

🥟 Dongyi yeast-fermented tangsuyuk (large) The domestic pork is fermented with yeast, so there was zero gaminess, and the meat was tender, not chewy at all. Truly crispy outside, juicy inside!!! And the chewy texture was outstanding on top of that.

Besides the standard sauce, they also served mustard-wasabi sauce and soy sauce, so we got to dip according to our taste. A touch of pungent wasabi cut through the richness beautifully and gave it a much more refined flavor! The moment I took a bite, I finally understood why mom kept insisting we come here!

Omija tea served as a finish to the meal

Finishing the meal off with omija (schisandra berry) tea made for a perfect spread.

Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch — the place mom kept returning to and finally got us all to try! Every dish felt made with care, and the whole family fell for the crispy-yet-tender texture of the tangsuyuk.
