The side dishes and kimchi that come with the meal

You know a good Korean restaurant always has great kimchi as a baseline, right? Wongiok near Gwanghwamun really is different starting from the kimchi.

Wongiok Gwanghwamun's basic table setting already feels like being taken care of before the main dishes even arrive. Everything comes plated cleanly on elegant square porcelain, and each side dish has a refined quality.
Roseu-pyeonchae (sliced roast beef) with mustard salad, 18,000 won

This bright starter — roseupyeonchae and mustard salad — was the best opener to our meal.

Thin, tender slices of hanwoo (Korean beef) sirloin are generously topped with shrimp, assorted vegetables, and a tangy mustard salad.
Wrap the vegetables and shrimp in the beef and eat it in one bite — the sharp mustard aroma, the crisp vegetables, and the clean richness of the beef come together to reset your palate perfectly. It was a genuinely great way to open the appetite, and it ended up being my husband's and my favorite dish.
Premium hanwoo chaekkeut-gui grilled beef sirloin, 45,000 won
The main event of the meal: premium hanwoo chaekkeut sirloin. Golden-seared hanwoo sirloin on a hot cast-iron pan, plated with garnish and a special scallion salad, made for an eye-catching centerpiece.

Seared golden on the outside and juicy medium inside, one bite delivers a tender texture and rich, savory hanwoo juices. The grilled vegetable garnish — red pepper, kkwarigochu (shishito-like peppers), mushrooms — adds another layer of flavor.
The scallion salad served alongside features a striking look — thin perilla leaf slices, a vivid egg yolk, and sesame seeds.

Pop the yolk and mix it with the sweet-and-spicy scallion salad, then wrap it with the sirloin — the sharp, savory combination cuts through the richness perfectly, an ideal pairing.

The tender hanwoo flavor paired beautifully with the garnish vegetables — a very satisfying dish overall.
Nakji-bokkeum spicy stir-fried octopus, 24,000 won

A spicy counterpoint between the meat courses — nakji-bokkeum. Plump, fresh octopus is stir-fried in a savory sauce with plenty of smoky wok flavor.

The octopus kept its signature chewy, springy texture, and the sauce — spicy without being overly sweet — was addictive. Paired with the grilled dishes, it cut through the richness nicely, a great combination.
Yukhoe bibimbap raw beef rice bowl, 18,000 won and limited daily

For the last course, we chose the yukhoe bibimbap, and true to its limited-quantity status, it was generously composed.

In a brass bowl, fresh hanwoo yukhoe (beef tartare) and an egg yolk sit at the center, surrounded by an array of neatly arranged namul (seasoned vegetables) — bracken fern, radish, perilla leaves — a visual win from the start.

Mix it all together and take a bite — the savory freshness of the yukhoe and the careful seasoning of the namul come together for deep flavor. It's a limited-quantity item, so if you spot it on the menu, definitely order it!
Final verdict: is Wongiok Gwanghwamun worth it for a group dinner?

Wongiok Gwanghwamun delivered a fully realized spread, from the main grilled dish to the rice courses, with nothing lacking. Thanks to the refined presentation and deep flavors, it's a great choice for bringing your parents or finding a more formal gathering spot near Gwanghwamun!
