Jongno wine bar for a pre-wedding dinner in Seoul: Dongmyo Market

In short

Dongmyo Market is a wine bar in Jongno, Seoul, near Dongmyo, decorated like a small American grocery store. Over non-alcoholic wine and a highball, the beef brisket ragu tteokbokki (spicy stir-fried rice cakes) and the Market pork chop were shared during a long-overdue catch-up with a younger sibling. Dongmyo Market suits a slightly special occasion such as a pre-wedding invitation dinner.

Photo introducing the visit to Dongmyo Market

What makes Dongmyo Market feel like an American corner store?

I don't usually come to the Dongmyo area unless it's for vintage shopping or browsing the market, but it turns out places with great atmosphere are hiding all over here. Dongmyo Market in particular has a different feel from a typical wine bar, and it seemed like a good spot to talk and eat with someone I hadn't seen in a while, so I decided to visit for cham-mo (a pre-wedding gathering with people you haven't seen in a long time).

Honestly, what stood out most at Dongmyo Market wasn't even the food — it was the space itself. True to its name,

Wine and canned drinks are self-serve — you just pick whatever you like. We went with non-alcoholic wine and a highball. It felt like a thoughtful touch for lightweights like us who still want the mood without the pressure to drink.

Beef brisket ragu tteokbokki and the Market pork chop

First up was the beef brisket ragu tteokbokki (rice cake stir-fry), one of Dongmyo Market's signature dishes — tteokbokki with beef brisket and a ragu-style sauce. It's clearly different from tteokbokki at a regular snack shop, and the brisket added a nutty, savory depth.

Next came the market pork chops — the name alone caught my eye on the menu. The meat was cut into easy bite-sized pieces, great for sharing. One bite gave a clean, savory meat flavor balanced well with the seasoning, and it went really well as a drinking snack.

Is Dongmyo Market good for a pre-wedding dinner?

The menu here was more varied than I expected. Besides the pork chops and beef brisket ragu tteokbokki, there was pasta, gambas, fried rice with kimchi, and other dishes that work both as meals and drinking snacks. It's great for hangouts with friends or dates, and just as fitting for a cham-mo gathering like ours — I'd recommend it.

With wedding prep in full swing, doing the rounds of cham-mo has let me see people I hadn't met in a while, which has been nice. That day too, catching up over good food with a sibling I hadn't seen in a long time, getting out everything we hadn't had a chance to say, left me feeling really content.

Afterward we even stopped by a nice café near Sindang. Between the unique vibe of the Dongmyo neighborhood and the store's quirky, American-grocery-store feel, Dongmyo Market was a great spot when you want your cham-mo dinner to feel a bit more special than usual.
