Suwon Western restaurant for an after-work sunset dinner: Nonchalant
In short
Nonchalant Lounge (논샬랑라운지) is a Western-style lounge restaurant with an exotic feel near Jangan Gate in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. A longtime Suwon resident and his wife took a window seat after work on a weekday and ordered bisque rosé pasta, truffle bulgogi risotto, ricotta cheese salad and mushroom soup, with grapefruit ade and lemon draft beer. The bisque rosé pasta was impressive enough to rank as his best pasta of the year, and Nonchalant Lounge suits a sunset date in Haenggung-dong.

A weekday after-work date in Haenggung-dong: why Nonchalant Lounge?
Nonchalant Lounge (논샬랑라운지) is a newly opened, atmospheric lounge near Jangan Gate in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, and my wife and I went on a weekday evening after work for a cozy dinner. Even through the eyes of someone who has lived in Suwon for a long time, it was my favorite place of the ones I've visited recently.
I've lived in Suwon for years, but every time I come to Haenggung-dong it feels new and more charming than before. It carries the hip yet relaxed vibe of Seoul's Seongsu-dong or Gyeongnidan-gil, so it always puts me in a good mood.
In summer especially, the sky around sunset is indescribably beautiful, and just walking around is healing. After a week of work-weary days, I wanted to treat my wife to a nice Haenggung-dong restaurant date for once. I wanted to give us a special dinner away from the same old routine, so I started searching carefully for a place.

After all that searching, the place that landed on our radar was 'Nonchalant Lounge' near Jangan Gate. Before going, I looked up the name: "nonchalant" is an English word that comes from French, meaning "casually calm, relaxed and unbothered." Once I knew that, I got even more curious about the mood the space was going for. We set off excited, expecting its emotional, exotic atmosphere.

What are the atmosphere and window seats like at Nonchalant Lounge?
The inside of Nonchalant Lounge is roomier and cozier than I expected, with exotic decor like a European alley restaurant and window seats looking out on the Haenggung-dong sky. The moment we pushed open the heavy door and stepped in, my wife and I gasped at the same time.

A bright, spacious yet cozy room with stylish, tasteful interiors opened up in front of us, better than we'd imagined.

The exotic mood was so strong that it felt like walking into a local bar or restaurant on a quiet alley in France or Italy.

Not a single prop or light seemed left to chance. Completely taken by the atmosphere, we settled into the window seats, the best spot, with a full view of the Haenggung-dong sky.

Nonchalant Lounge had plenty of touches that amplify the romance. In the middle of the lounge hangs a big screen, and the soft, tasteful music playing from it wrapped the whole place in warmth.

With sight and sound both so pleasing, the perfect Haenggung-dong restaurant date mood came together naturally.
Ordering at Nonchalant Lounge is by QR code
At Nonchalant Lounge you scan the QR code on your table with your smartphone to view the menu and order. The ordering was very modern and convenient.

We wanted to try a good spread of the signature dishes, so we chose the bisque rosé pasta, truffle bulgogi risotto, ricotta cheese salad and mushroom soup. To add some refreshment, we also ordered a grapefruit ade and Nonchalant's signature lemon draft beer, and finished placing the order with gusto.

How did the food taste at Nonchalant Lounge?
Ricotta cheese salad and house-made pickles
The first things out at Nonchalant Lounge were the ricotta cheese salad and pickles that were clearly made in-house. A fresh first batter up.

The combination of crunchy vegetables and nutty cheese was just right for whetting the appetite, with a crowd-pleasing, clean and easygoing flavor.

The house-made pickles weren't sharply sour or sweet either, and did a great job of refreshing the palate between bites.
Bisque rosé pasta, the best pasta of the year
The dish that impressed me most at Nonchalant Lounge was the signature bisque rosé pasta. After the first bite my wife and I looked at each other with wide eyes, because this was not the usual predictable, heavy rosé sauce from a bottle.

The sauce felt like a stew, made by simmering seafood stock from crab and shrimp for a very long time until deep and rich. The chewy pasta noodles were perfectly coated in that precious bisque sauce.
With every bite the umami of the sea swirled through my mouth, and I can say without hesitation it was so wonderful that I'd rank it number one among the pastas I've eaten this year. With this quality, I became convinced I have to recommend it as a Haenggung-dong pasta date spot to anyone with a sweetheart.

Mushroom soup and baguette
The mushroom soup at Nonchalant Lounge had a depth on a different level from hotel breakfast buffet soup or the processed kind. It comes with baguette bread.

The texture made it clear it was carefully simmered fresh in the kitchen every day, and the plain, earthy mushroom flavor and the softness of cream filled my mouth. Dunking the baguette that came with it deep into the soup gave a wonderful texture, soft and crisp at once. It was a heartfelt starter that truly recreated the Haenggung-dong Western brunch style.

Truffle bulgogi risotto
The truffle bulgogi risotto at Nonchalant Lounge was a cheat-code combination that any Korean is bound to love. The moment it hit the table, the scent of fine truffle oil drifted softly in every direction.
Sweet and salty seasoned bulgogi (marinated beef) was tender between the grains of rice, and the truffle aroma and the sweet-savory bulgogi went together far better than I imagined. It was so addictive that I couldn't bear to leave a single spoonful and scraped the plate clean.

Grapefruit ade and signature lemon draft beer
At Nonchalant Lounge we had the grapefruit ade, with its charming fizzy zing, and the fresh, cool signature lemon draft beer, and the fatigue of a weekday evening melted away like snow. Every dish was well made, so I was satisfied with all of them, and my wife, who has a picky palate, kept giving a thumbs-up and looked happy throughout. As her husband, I felt quietly proud and glad that I'd led a successful Haenggung-dong pasta date.
Is Nonchalant Lounge worth recommending for a Haenggung-dong date?
At Nonchalant Lounge the taste of the food, the exotic and romantic atmosphere, and the Haenggung-dong sky faintly visible past the window all lined up perfectly. Personally, I'd give it all 5 out of 5 stars, and it has made my list of top restaurants.

It's great for a leisurely Haenggung-dong Western brunch in the daytime, and visiting around sunset as we did makes it an ideal romantic Suwon Haenggung-dong date course too.

If you want to taste the deep flavors of proper pasta and risotto and make unforgettable memories with someone precious, I sincerely recommend planning a cozy Haenggung-dong pasta date at Nonchalant Lounge next to Jangan Gate this weekend. As a longtime Suwon resident, I'm confident it will be a failure-proof place.
