Songridan-gil date izakaya: mild level-2 red motsunabe, Horanggul

In short

Horanggul Bangi Branch is an izakaya (Japanese-style pub) in the Bangi-dong food alley in Songpa, Seoul, between Jamsil Station and Mongchontoseong Station, specializing in daechang and gopchang motsunabe (beef intestine hot pot). On a Songridan-gil date, the writer ordered red-broth gopchang motsunabe at spice level 2 with added rice and Japanese-style udon noodles; level 2 wasn't spicy at all even for someone with a low spice tolerance, and the udon was chewy and springy. For something hearty and Japanese around Songridan-gil beyond sushi or gyukatsu, the motsunabe at Horanggul Bangi Branch is a good choice.

A Songridan-gil Japanese date meal: why motsunabe?

If you want a Japanese meal for a Songridan-gil date that is trendier and more filling than sushi or gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet), I recommend the motsunabe at Horanggul Bangi Branch. The weather's been so nice lately, so lots of you are heading to Songridan-gil on dates, right? The hardest part of planning a date is picking the meal. Anything too heavy or awkward to eat is out, and you'd rather have something Japanese that's neat and easy. So here's my story of eating motsunabe at Horanggul, a Jamsil favorite ෆ

Where is Horanggul Bangi Branch?

Horanggul Bangi Branch is in the Bangi-dong food alley, between Jamsil Station and Mongchontoseong Station. Its main branch is in Beomgye, Anyang, and it's a Blue Ribbon-listed spot with lines! I've been back several times, and it's been satisfying every single visit.

Izakaya-style seating inside Horanggul Bangi Branch

Interior and seating at Horanggul Bangi Branch

The inside has the clean, tidy feel typical of a Japanese izakaya, with seating for 2 up to 4. Groups can push tables together too, so no worry about getting split up, haha.

Even though it's an izakaya, you can have lunch here! The lunch menu has day-by-day discounts, so the prices are even more reasonable. In the evening, plenty of people come just for a meal without drinking.

The feeling of actually being in Japan runs all through the place, so if you can't decide what Japanese food to eat on a Songridan-gil date, try Horanggul Bangi Branch, haha

Horanggul motsunabe menu and ordering tips

Horanggul's signature is daechang jeongol (beef large intestine hot pot) motsunabe, and you can choose daechang, gopchang, or daechang + gopchang to taste. You can add rice and noodles after the motsunabe, but the broth can't be refilled, so watch your portions.

After you order, they bring the nabe (hot pot) to the table like this. Once it's boiled a while, a staff member opens the lid and even tidies things up (?) so it's easy to eat!

Bowl of rice ordered with the motsunabe

We were going to eat noodles, so we ordered rice separately as a bowl of plain rice. The grains are fluffy, and with the bubbling, rich gopchang broth it's really filling and delicious.

Songridan-gil Japanese date meal: Horanggul's gopchang hot pot! You can add extra gopchang or brisket, but you have to say so when you first order. Before the staff tidy things up, they also give you time to take photos of the food, haha

Then you just boil it a bit longer! They tell you when it's okay to eat, so we could dine without any worry. There was more gopchang in there than I expected.

Horanggul motsunabe at spice level 2: is it very spicy?

We chose level 2 for the broth, and even for someone with a low spice tolerance it wasn't spicy at all. I thought we could have gone with level 3! Motsunabe usually has a white broth, but Horanggul's is red, with a spicy, refreshing kick that cuts through the richness.

It's pleasantly spicy with a subtle savory depth, so I kept spooning up the broth without realizing it. I bet it would go really well with beer too!

Adding Japanese-style udon to motsunabe: when to order

We added Japanese-style udon noodles to the motsunabe. The noodles don't come out right after you order, so I'd recommend ordering a bit earlier. Especially if you plan to have both noodles and risotto, you must manage the amount of broth...!

Japanese-style udon noodles added to the motsunabe

Japanese-style udon is definitely different from regular udon: chewy yet springy, with really great tension in the noodle itself. The noodles soak up the broth, so even eating them on their own wasn't boring.
