Cocktail bar for first-timers in Sillim, Seoul: Martini at Yahwa
In short
Yahwa Sillim (야화 혼술바 신림점) is a cocktail bar built for drinking solo, in a basement right by Sillim Station Exit 4 in Gwanak, Seoul. A self-described pocha (Korean street pub) fan visited a cocktail bar for the first time at 30, tried the Dohwa (15,000 won), Martini (13,000 won) and Kahlúa milk (12,000 won), and spent the evening with a friend over board games and the guestbook. The food is not filling, but Yahwa Sillim is a comfortable bar for cocktail beginners and quiet solo drinks.

Is Yahwa Sillim awkward if it's your first cocktail bar?
Yahwa Sillim (야화 혼술바 신림점) was a comfortable and fun place even for someone who had never set foot in a cocktail bar in 30 years. I usually prefer pocha-style pubs (Korean tavern-style drinking spots), where you eat tasty snacks, even a proper meal, along with your drink, so this was my first cocktail bar in my 30 years of life.

It felt a little different from my usual drinking scene, so I worried beforehand that it might be awkward, but once I got there it was more relaxed and more fun than I expected.

It's near Sillim Station, so it's easy to get to, and I think it's a good option for anyone looking for a quiet place to have a drink in Sillim.

What is the atmosphere like at Yahwa Sillim?
Yahwa Sillim is in a basement, and the softly dim lighting and the bar-style space caught my eye as soon as I walked in. It isn't a rowdy pub; the music is gentle and the mood is calm, which felt fresh to me.

There were board games on the table. I'd always thought of cocktail bars as places where you just sit quietly and drink, but with board games here, it's a nice place to come with a friend and chat while you pass the time.

You get a hangover drink and honey when you sit down
As soon as we sat down, the owner brought us a hangover drink, and it was tastier than I expected. It tasted like jelly, so it went down easily, and they also set out some honey. It seemed to be there so you can adjust the drink with honey if a cocktail or the alcohol doesn't suit your taste. Little touches like this show that they think about their guests.

The menu is on a QR code
The menu at Yahwa Sillim is a QR code, very now, so you can check it and order straight from your phone. There's no need to keep flipping through a paper menu, which made choosing easy. I liked that.

Dohwa, Martini, Kahlúa milk: how do the three cocktails taste?
The cocktails at Yahwa Sillim range from low to high alcohol, and I ordered three, mostly low-ABV ones. First up is the Dohwa (도화) at ₩15,000.

Dohwa ₩15,000: a fresh, sweet starter drink
The Dohwa was a fresh, sweet cocktail. The aroma isn't overwhelming and the taste is smooth, so I think it would suit people trying cocktails for the first time, or women who like lighter drinks. It's a good one to sip while enjoying the mood.

Martini ₩13,000: a classic with a strong herbal scent
Next, the Martini at ₩13,000. It was a herbal cocktail. Personally, the scent hit me pretty strongly, and it reminded me of an Innisfree herbal skin toner I used to use, haha. So I thought, "Is this like drinking toner?" hahaha
So I looked it up, haha. A martini is a classic cocktail made by mixing gin or vodka with dry vermouth. The herbs and spices (botanicals) that go into vermouth are apparently these:
- 🌿 Wormwood (Artemisia) → the bitter taste essential to vermouth
- 🌿 Cinnamon
- 🌿 Clove
- 🌿 Coriander seed
- 🌿 Cardamom
- 🌿 Vanilla
- 🍊 Orange peel
- 🌸 Flowers and roots
- Each brand has its own secret blend
Once I knew that, I thought, hmm, it's like an air freshener... but it's not bad? And I ended up enjoying it.

Kahlúa milk ₩12,000: like sweet milk tea
And the Kahlúa milk at ₩12,000. It was really sweet and smooth. To me it felt like sweet milk tea, so I think even people who don't drink much could enjoy it fairly easily.
Are the snacks at Yahwa Sillim filling?
The snacks at Yahwa Sillim are mostly simple things like potato chips and chocolate cake, so people like me who love pocha-style snacks may find it a little disappointing. If you go expecting hearty food, it will probably feel different from what you hoped for.
The complimentary snack was a drumstick-shaped cracker, and I also ordered truffle-flavored potato chips for ₩5,000. They went nicely with the cocktails.

I also ordered salty chocolate. They say it's good with whisky, but the chocolate is so salty that it made me crave water and more drinks.
Time flies when you write the guestbook and debate
At Yahwa Sillim, while drinking we also filled out the guestbook and, with my friend,

had a "death debate" and talked about all sorts of things, and the time went by faster than I expected, haha. It felt less like a place where you only drink and more like a space where you can settle in and spend time.
Is it a good bar to visit alone in Sillim?
The biggest feature of Yahwa Sillim is that it's great for going alone. Ordinary pubs can feel a bit awkward when you're solo, but Yahwa Sillim is set up as a bar, so coming to drink by yourself felt natural.

Since it was our first visit, we sat wherever we liked, but for the guests who came in afterward, the staff arranged the seating so they could sit diagonally from each other without feeling pressured. That made conversation flow naturally.
Thanks to the soft lighting and the moody atmosphere, I think it's a good space for people who want a quiet drink alone, people looking for a date spot, and people who want a different kind of time with friends.
