Seaweed-wrapped kaisendon lunch at Ilpum, a Yeouido Japanese spot
In short
Ilpum Yeouido Branch is a Japanese restaurant on the B1 floor of Anwon Building near National Assembly Station in Yeouido, Seoul, and kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) is its signature dish. Arriving alone at 1pm on a weekday and finding the room already full, the writer ordered the 26,000-won kaisendon, which arrived with steamed egg, cold udon and mango pudding. Piling rice and sashimi onto sheets of seaweed with wasabi and soy sauce was the most memorable part of the meal at Ilpum.

I had a lunch appointment in Yeouido, so I stopped by Ilpum, famous for its kaisendon (seafood rice bowl). I got there around 1pm on a weekday, a bit early for my appointment, and peeked inside... wow, even on a weekday lunch the place was nearly packed. That's when it hit me — Yeouido's famous restaurants really are different, haha.
It seemed like a spot a lot of Yeouido office workers come to for lunch, so it'd be smart to visit with a little extra time to spare during the lunch rush. What I ordered was the ₩26,000 kaisendon! Bottom line up front: if you love raw fish, this is a bowl that'll keep you happy from first bite to last. ❤️

Where is Ilpum Yeouido Branch, and what is the room like?
Ilpum Yeouido Branch is on B1 of Anwon Building, 25 Eunhaeng-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Inside the building, it's listed alongside places like Donghaedo Japanese Restaurant and Donghaedo Sushi, so it wasn't hard to find by checking the building directory.

The entrance is done up in wood tones, giving it a clean, calm Japanese-restaurant feel. Stepping inside, there was a long row of bar-style seats built around a central kitchen space.
Since I got there early, I peeked in from outside and saw a lot of people already eating — I thought, "This really must be a top Yeouido lunch spot." And in I went!

Ilpum's menu and kaisendon prices
Ilpum Yeouido Branch's signature kaisendon is ₩26,000, and the premium kaisendon is ₩37,000. Looking at the menu, beyond kaisendon there was quite a range of options seafood lovers would appreciate — sashimi, sushi, uni, and seasonal yellowtail.

I ordered the basic kaisendon that day. It already looked hearty in the menu photo, but the real thing looked even more delicious than the picture.
The soft steamed egg served before the kaisendon
While I waited for the kaisendon, steamed egg, broth, and kimchi came out first.

This steamed egg was better than I expected. The moment you dip a spoon in, it's bouncy yet incredibly soft. Put it in your mouth and it basically melts away with barely any chewing needed.

Even before the main dish arrived, I was already thinking "this place is good," haha.
How generous is Ilpum's 26,000-won kaisendon?
And then the kaisendon I'd been waiting for arrived! The moment it landed on the table, the first thought that popped into my head was...
Whoa... this seafood is seriously loaded!
The rice underneath was almost completely covered in seafood — shrimp, salmon, tuna, white fish, and more, all piled generously into one bowl.
In the center sat roe that pops with each bite, plus egg, wasabi, and seaweed served alongside, so there was fun in picking and choosing what to eat. The colors were gorgeous too, right? This is the kind of bowl you have to photograph the second it arrives... 📸
How to wrap the kaisendon in seaweed with wasabi and soy sauce
Ilpum's kaisendon was delicious eaten plain, but what I liked best was wrapping it in the seaweed served alongside.

Lay down a sheet of seaweed, add a little of the seasoned rice, then pile on your favorite seafood! Top it with a bit of roe and wasabi, dip it in soy sauce, and take a bite... wow, this combo is so good!!! I especially loved topping it with a thick piece of tuna — the softness of the sashimi and rice combined with the crisp seaweed made me keep wrapping bite after bite.

A touch of wasabi made the seafood taste even cleaner. And the fact that you're not stuck eating just one type of fish — "salmon this time, tuna next!" — mixing and matching to your own taste was part of the charm of kaisendon.
More seafood hiding under the rice
As I worked my way through the sashimi on top, I started noticing ingredients hiding underneath.

There was something that looked like crab meat along with softly mixed seafood, and stirring it into the rice and wrapping it in seaweed gave a whole different flavor!

It was already hearty when it arrived, but the way more kept turning up as I ate made it even more satisfying. As someone who loves seafood, this bowl was exactly my taste. ❤️

Karaage and cold udon, the next course
I thought the kaisendon was the whole meal, but cold udon followed. Clear, cool broth with udon noodles and a hefty piece of karaage on top — I tried the broth first... oh, the broth is seriously excellent.
After the kaisendon, the cold, clean broth felt like it reset my palate completely. And that karaage on top! Even sitting in the broth, the outside stayed crispy while the inside was juicy — proper crispy-outside, tender-inside texture. Alternating between the kaisendon and cool sips of udon in between made for a great combo.
Mango pudding to finish 🍮
The meal wrapped up with a gorgeous, golden mango pudding.

I was already full from seafood and cold udon, but there's always room for dessert, right? Haha.

One soft spoonful of pudding, and that sweetness came through, wrapping up the meal on a clean note!

Steamed egg → kaisendon → cold udon → mango pudding — going through all that made me feel like I'd gotten a full, satisfying meal from a single order.
Final verdict on the kaisendon at Ilpum Yeouido Branch

Yeouido has no shortage of office-worker favorite restaurants, but if you love seafood, Ilpum's kaisendon is worth trying at least once. Above all, having such a variety of seafood in one bowl made picking and choosing genuinely fun.
Even thinking about it now, I want to go back for that combo of seasoned rice and sashimi wrapped in seaweed with a touch of wasabi and soy sauce. 🤤 Eating there in person, I got a pretty good sense of why the place was packed on a weekday lunch.

If you're looking for kaisendon or a Japanese lunch spot in Yeouido, be sure to check out Ilpum :)
