A grilled fish restaurant that's appeared on various TV shows! True to its name, the fish is cooked in a wood-fired oven, so there's no fishy smell and the inside stays moist — it's been popular ever since opening.
The parking lot behind the restaurant is also spacious, so it's convenient to drive there, and it's perfect for group gatherings.
The interior is clean since it opened recently. The tables are spaced widely apart too, so you can eat without being disturbed by the next table.
There were a lot of families and friend groups visiting. If you're coming as a group, making a reservation makes things easier.

What's at the salad bar, and why one dish per person?
Grilled fish restaurant Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo also runs a salad bar, so you need to order one menu item per person. Basic banchan (side dishes) refills are available, and you can also help yourself to items not among the basic banchan, like fried snacks, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and sungnyung (scorched rice tea). There are various namul (seasoned vegetable) dishes too, so you can make your own bibimbap. The salad bar is super clean and the food is neatly arranged.

What grilled fish dishes are on the menu?
Besides the main mackerel, there's a wide range of grilled fish options — hairtail, Atka mackerel, Spanish mackerel, dried yellow corvina (boribulgobi) and more. There's a separate kids' menu too, so it looked like a great spot for visitors with children!

What we ordered: wood-fired mackerel and jeyuk bokkeum, 16,000 won each
- Wood-fired grilled mackerel — ₩16,000
- Wood-fired jeyuk bokkeum — ₩16,000
Since this was our first visit to Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo, we ordered the signature grilled mackerel along with jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork), which seemed like a good pairing.

For ₩16,000, you get all these neatly arranged side dishes plus the whole salad bar — it's a great-value grilled fish spot.

The basic banchan came as six clean, neatly arranged dishes. They tasted good too, so I refilled a few times haha.

And there was even a seaweed soup packed with seaweed! The basic side dishes went really well with the main dishes like the grilled mackerel and jeyuk bokkeum — very satisfying.
Wood-fired grilled mackerel: crisp skin, moist flesh
This was my first time trying mackerel grilled in a wood-fired oven. Even at a glance, even the skin looked delicious 🫢

I usually don't like mackerel skin, but at Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo the skin was so crispy that eating it along with the flesh made it even better..!

The mackerel was big, so there was plenty of flesh, and it was really tender. Grilled at a high temperature in the wood-fired oven, it had no excess oil while staying moist — crispy outside, moist inside, perfected!!

There was no fishy taste, and it was seasoned just right — total rice thief. It's also delicious with the wasabi they give you 👍🏻

You can choose between brown rice and white rice. A spoonful of rice with a piece of mackerel and a whole bowl disappears in no time!! It's a great grilled fish spot to bring your parents to.
Jeyuk bokkeum: sweet-spicy stir-fried pork

Grilled fish is the main draw, but the jeyuk bokkeum is excellent too. The onions and scallions added give it a nice flavor boost.

The tender pork has a subtle smoky char that makes your mouth water. The sauce is sweet-spicy and addictive. It coats the meat completely, so your chopsticks don't stop haha.
The mackerel and jeyuk bokkeum combo was a hit too. My boyfriend loved it so much he ate two bowls of rice haha.

For dessert, we thoroughly enjoyed the plum tea and peach iced tea from the self-serve bar.
Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Suwon KT Wiz Park Branch, the grilled fish specialist in Jowon-dong, Suwon! The wood-fired grilled mackerel, extra moist and crispy, was a must-try dish. It's a healthy, filling Jowon-dong spot that's also great for bringing your parents.
