Daebong-dong Korean restaurant, opening-run window table: Hyangtaek
In short
Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is a Korean restaurant serving rice bowls and pot rice in Daebong-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, in the wedding-street alley near Gyeongbuk Uni Hospital Station Exit 3. Because a Tabling queue forms at mealtimes, this visit was an opening run that meant no wait and a window-side table for two, with mackerel gondre rice and a side of Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi. The gentle aroma of gondre (dried thistle greens) with pan-grilled chicken thigh made Hyangtaek Daebong Branch an easy recommendation for a date or a family meal.

A Korean restaurant lunch spot near Gyeongbuk Uni Hospital Station in Daegu — Daebong-dong. Hyangtaek Daebong Branch, a Korean restaurant known for its healthy ingredients.
Where is Hyangtaek Daebong Branch, and where can you park?

Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is located in an alley of the wedding district near Gyeongbuk Uni Hospital Station Exit 3!
🅿 As for parking, only 1–2 cars can park in front of the restaurant, and there's no separate lot or parking fee support, so you'll need to find an open spot in the alley or use a nearby paid lot!

It's a Korean restaurant with beautifully plated rice bowls and noodle dishes like yukhoe (raw beef) bibimbap and mackerel gondre rice — it's known enough to have several branches across Daegu.

Hyangtaek Daebong Branch always has a wait at mealtimes, requiring the table-waiting system, so I went with an opening run instead!
Inside Hyangtaek Daebong Branch: seating and the window table for two

I did an opening run and about 2 other parties had already arrived! Tables come in 2-, 4-, and 8-person sizes, and full venue booking for around 30 people is also possible!

Since it's an open kitchen, you can watch the cooking happen right in front of you, and it was clear at a glance how clean and organized everything was!

For groups of 8 or fewer, there are two 8-person tables in the middle, good for team outings or small group meals!!

I sat at a window-side table for two, and with an old tiled-roof house right across the way, the view was great too!

On the table was a guide on how to eat it deliciously. It suggests finely chopping the ingredients, mixing everything well, and then adding gopchang gim (seasoned laver) and bibim jeotgal (seasoned fermented seafood) to taste!

What comes with the basic table setting?

Before the main dish arrived, the side dishes came first! It was made up of four items: a clear soup, bibim jeotgal, pickled gungchae (a leafy vegetable), and gopchang dolgim (crispy seasoned laver) with soy sauce.
How do the mackerel gondre rice and Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi taste?
What was ordered: mackerel gondre rice, Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi, zero-sugar cola.

I ordered mackerel gondre rice with a side of Cheongsong chicken bulgogi, and the table was set as shown above haha. Doesn't it look really pretty and delicious??

First, the mackerel gondre rice has gondre and sautéed mushrooms and sesame seeds on top of the rice, topped with boneless grilled mackerel!

To eat it, you finely mash up the mackerel and mix it all together, adding sauce to taste as you like! There's a note warning that there might be bones, but mine didn't have any!

The seasoning wasn't sharp or overpowering, and with the rich gondre aroma and flavor eaten alongside the boneless grilled mackerel, the textures of the gondre and mackerel came together really well — it was genuinely delicious!!

For the side, I ordered the Cheongsong chicken bulgogi, and the portion was quite generous — perfect for two people sharing one order! The chicken thigh meat was flattened thin and grilled into a round shape, like a savory pancake!

This was my first time trying chicken bulgogi grilled like a pancake, and it was so tender it practically melted????? Since it's already seasoned, and there's no spiciness to it, it paired really well with the non-spicy mackerel gondre rice bowl!!
