Charcoal-grilled freshwater eel, the signature dish

Today I want to introduce a place I visited to stuff myself with all-you-can-eat eel of just insane quality! It's 'Songnim Bok Jangeo Unlimited Freshwater Eel Seongsu Branch' in Seongsu-dong! Honestly, with buffets the meat or eel quality is often a bit disappointing, right? But here, one bite in and I was like, wait, this isn't buffet quality?? The eel was so plump and in such good condition. I got my body properly recharged and was amazed by the taste, so I really wanted to share this with anyone visiting Seongsu.

Where is Songnim Bok Jangeo Seongsu Branch?

Songnim Bok Jangeo Seongsu Branch is a bit south of the Seongsu-dong café street, right near the Seongsu 119 Safety Center! It's a decent walk from Seongsu Station or Konkuk University Station too. Being near the main road, the building was easier to find than I expected! Check the map below and use it as a reference when visiting~

Arriving in front of the shop, the first thing I noticed was the big sign reading 'Unlimited Freshwater Eel 29,900 won'! Unlimited freshwater eel for 29,900 won — usually going out for eel once costs over 100,000 won.. It's really a dish I only used to eat on special occasions!

There was also a big banner for the opening event — one free bottle of bokbunja per table — which got me excited! Eel paired with bokbunja, what a combo, haha!

The interior vibe and eel quality

Here's the inside! The tables were spaced nicely apart, which was really nice. Feels like you could comfortably enjoy the eel buffet with friends here!

Apparently Songnim Bok Jangeo Seoul Seongsu Branch is a partner of a wholesale distributor from the freshwater eel farming cooperative. That explains why the eel quality is this outstanding!

Here's the menu board on the wall! Adult buffet is 29,900 won, elementary school kids are 14,000 won — the value is genuinely amazing! (Table charge of 3,000 won extra.) They also have meal items like eel soup, galbitang, yukgaejang, plus buckwheat noodles and ramyeon, and takeout too, which looked great for enjoying at home.

We ordered the adult buffet for two.

Here's the basic table setting after ordering!

This is the plate the staff brought out for us first! After that you're free to help yourself at the self-serve bar. The eel and meat to grill were generously loaded on. Pale, plump eel plus meat — man, absolute perfection!

The ginger and sauce that go with the eel are essential too! Load up the sauce with ginger.

They also prepared some nice side dishes to go with it! There's more at the self-serve bar, so you can eat as much as you want.

And we got the opening event bokbunja bottle I saw on the banner outside! It's such a perfect match with the eel, hahaha.

The self-serve bar packed with whole eels

The most impressive part is this self-serve bar! Along with the basic side dishes, it was packed full of plump, fresh whole eels! No need to hold back at all, and the owner kept restocking it fully. I was seriously amazed!

Charcoal grill with strong heat

The charcoal heat was strong, so I figured the eel would cook up nice and golden brown fast! Let's start grilling for real now!

Thick freshwater eel placed on the charcoal grill

Put the eel on! Can you see how thick and plump the eel meat is, haha.

you get this appetizing eel shape!

The teriyaki sauce and white kimchi wrap combo

Even in the photo it looks so moist, makes me want to eat it again just looking at it. You can really tell they're using quality eel.

I picked up a well-grilled piece of eel and dipped it right into the sweet teriyaki sauce. The savory fattiness just spreads through your mouth — I couldn't believe this was buffet quality.

Wrapping it in white kimchi too, it's a taste you could eat endlessly!

Pork belly and duck neck grilling over charcoal

Pork belly and duck neck too

We grilled up pork belly and duck neck as well! This place isn't just great for eel, the pork belly is excellent too. You could tell they cared about the meat quality as well.

Emptied first plate with remaining side dishes

Cleared the first plate nicely! Then went to the self-serve bar and brought back more eel, hehe.

Grilling eel refilled from the self-serve bar

Grilling it golden and crispy again over the charcoal.

Put a thick piece of eel on lettuce, added pungent garlic and white kimchi, and wrapped it up into a big bite!

The beauty of unlimited refills! You can eat three pieces at once like this, haha. Such a luxury to stuff your mouth full of eel!

Three pieces of eel piled on at once

Went back for more again, hahaha. It was just so delicious I kept going back. Let me live vicariously for you all, haha.

This round of grilled eel also got two pieces topped with teriyaki-ginger sauce and wrapped up. Add garlic and pickled onion on top and you've got a truly delicious eel wrap!!! Properly recharged and ate until I was stuffed.

Sign near the entrance for eel takeout sales

Eel takeout, 650g for 35,000 won

On the way out, I noticed a big sign near the entrance about takeout sales! You can buy 650g (after trimming from 1kg) for 35,000 won. Eating buffet-style until you're stuffed at the restaurant is great, but this seemed like a great value option for grilling at home, camping, or a family party too — I'll have to come back for takeout next time!

Seongsu eel buffet, honest overall review

Songnim Bok Jangeo Unlimited Freshwater Eel Seongsu Branch, introduced today, had eel that was plump and thick to a degree hard to believe for a buffet, with genuinely impressive quality! From the fresh eel generously restocked at the self-serve bar, to the crispy-outside-tender-inside texture with charcoal aroma, to the little touches like the opening event bokbunja wine service — it was a really satisfying place! Especially the fact that it's located in Seongsu — I'm always hunting for good restaurants in Seongsu-dong while going around to pop-ups there! For anyone near Seongsu-dong or Konkuk University wanting to recharge with high-quality freshwater eel at a great price, I genuinely recommend this place from the bottom of my heart!
