How was having a drink and dinner after a show in Hyehwa?
After the play ended, I visited Hanamato Daehangno Hyehwa (하나마토 대학로혜화) for a light drink. It is close to Hyehwa Station, so it was easy to reach by public transit, and the evening atmosphere on the street made it a nice stop after a date.
At the time of my visit, draft beer was ₩3,500 a glass. I started with a beer, but the dishes I ordered were substantial enough for a meal, so I left feeling full.
What seating was available indoors and outdoors?
Japanese music played inside, giving the space a cozy feel. The tables were comfortably spaced, and from the bar tables I could watch the ordered skewers being prepared.
Personally, I liked the outdoor tables in front of the restaurant, but they were full when I visited. The second floor had wider tables and felt roomier than the first, so I thought it would suit company dinners or group gatherings. Its large windows made it feel open, but the second-floor window seats were also all taken.
How did I order?
The kiosk had picture descriptions, making the menu easy to choose from. Basic tableware was prepared at each table. While waiting after ordering, I looked around the doll corner, which had various small items, snacks, and products sold in Japan. I waited with the draft beer that came out first, and the food arrived soon after.
How were the dishes with beer?
Was the yakisoba good as a meal?
I ordered yakisoba (Japanese stir-fried noodles) because I like it. The springy udon noodles went well with the savory seasoning, and it was topped generously with katsuobushi (bonito flakes). The portion was not overwhelming but worked well as a meal, and it paired nicely with beer.
How did I eat the spicy seafood nabe?
The spicy seafood nabe (Japanese hot pot) was topped with plenty of bean sprouts and included extra udon noodles. It arrived already cooked, so I only needed to let it boil a little longer. It was pleasantly spicy for my taste, and the generous portion made it good as a meal replacement.
Each table had an induction cooktop, so I could eat it warm to the end. When the broth reduced and became salty, I added water as I ate.
What was the texture of the fried chicken thigh?
Tori karaage is fried chicken made with thigh meat. It stayed crispy while I ate, and I liked that it did not smell oily. The dressed salad served with it went well with the fried chicken, and dipping it in mayonnaise topped with shichimi pepper gave it a nicely balanced flavor.
I went in intending to have just a light drink, but ended up eating the dishes like a meal. The menu items I had went well with beer, and the atmosphere suited a post-show stop when I wanted to take care of both dinner and drinks.
