Byeollae, Namyangju shabu kalguksu hotter than Shin Ramyun: Onjeongban

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch is a shabu-shabu and knife-cut noodle restaurant in Namyangju, Gyeonggi, with a generous self-bar and set-course meal. Returning with her mom, the writer worked through spicy broth beef shabu, elm-tree medicinal boiled pork, handmade round dumplings, kalguksu noodles, and finishing porridge, with the gondre rice self-bar still just as good. On-site parking in the building made it easy to bring the older generation along for a family meal.

Decaf americano near Seoul Botanic Park: Magok café Pict Roastery

Pict Roastery Magongnaru Branch is a specialty roastery café near Exit 2 of Magongnaru Station in Gangseo, Seoul, roasting its own beans in-house. After a walk through the Seoul Botanic Park greenhouse, the order here was a decaf americano, a basil yuzu ade and a Kyoto matcha basque cheesecake — the decaf still had a deep aroma and the matcha cake was thick and rich. Pict Roastery is an easy stop before or after a Seoul Botanic Park outing.

Makchang date after the show Jump in Euljiro 3-ga: Baegyeom Makchang

Baegyeom Makchang Euljiro Main Branch is a salt-aged makchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant on Supyo-ro near Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. A couple stopped by after watching the show Jump and ordered two servings of Daegu-style makchang, a ginger highball, and kimchi mari guksu (cold kimchi noodle soup), wrapping the thick, juicy makchang in perilla leaves with homemade makjang sauce. Thick cuts that stayed juicy even after grilling and a tangy noodle finish made this a satisfying Euljiro date course.

Dubai chewy cookies at Balsan Station dessert café: Byway Bakers

Byway Bakers Balsan Station is a wood-toned dessert bakery about 400m from Exit 3 of Balsan Station in Gangseo, Seoul. The takeout order was a Shanghai butter rice cake, a chocolate almond financier, an Oreo financier and two Dubai chewy cookies (du-jjon-ku), and at home the rice cake was thick and springy while the Dubai cookies still had crisp kadayif and pistachio cream. For chewy desserts and crisp-outside, moist-inside baked treats, Byway Bakers Balsan Station is a satisfying pick.
