Shabu-kalguksu restaurant in Namyangju with parents: Onjeongban
In short
Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch is a shabu-shabu and knife-cut noodle restaurant in Namyangju, Gyeonggi, with a generous self-bar and set-course meal. Returning with her mom, the writer worked through spicy broth beef shabu, elm-tree medicinal boiled pork, handmade round dumplings, kalguksu noodles, and finishing porridge, with the gondre rice self-bar still just as good. On-site parking in the building made it easy to bring the older generation along for a family meal.

Yesterday I took my mom out to a Byeollae restaurant I love haha. Actually, my husband and I had come to Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu before, just the two of us!!
Even back then, I remember thinking this place felt exactly like my parents' style!! The whole set-course spread seemed like it would suit older palates well, and the ingredients were fresh, so I thought it'd be a great Byeollae restaurant to bring my parents to. So this time I went back with my mom and my husband, the three of us😊 Just as I expected, mom loved it, and I felt so proud!!!
A Byeollae restaurant that satisfies even on a repeat visit — what about parking?

Onjeongban has dedicated parking inside the restaurant building, so there's no need to worry about parking, and it makes bringing older family members along stress-free.
A self-bar with gondre rice too
The moment we sat down, we made our rounds at the self-bar first!!

Still just as generously stocked as before — gondre rice (rice mixed with dried gondre greens), slushies, barley candy, purple sweet potato snacks, and other desserts haha.

My mom especially loves gondre rice, so she mixed it with sesame oil and the special sauce, took a bite, and said 'this place is pretty good, huh?'
I just knew she'd love it. So glad I brought her, felt really proud hahaha.

The spicy broth — how spicy is it, really?
This time I ordered the sharp, spicy version of the shabu broth, and honestly the soup was spicier than I expected.

A notch spicier than Shin Ramyeon.
We loved how the spicy broth soaked into the vegetables and meat — we couldn't stop reaching for more. If you can't handle spice, I'd recommend the clear broth haha.
A full spread, right down to the elm-tree medicinal boiled pork

The elm-tree medicinal boiled pork (eomnamu hanbang suyuk) was moist and tender — topped with salted shrimp and pickled radish strips, it was clean and never greasy.

Soft, tender boiled pork — an absolute cannot-go-wrong dish!! haha
The beef shabu, briefly blanched with the vegetables and dipped in the special soy sauce, had rich beefy flavor with the vegetables' cool freshness balancing it out — words fail me haha. So spicy and so satisfying.
The house's signature charm: handmade round dumplings

Personally, I think this place's signature dish is the handmade round dumplings (gulrim mandu).

The dumplings have thin wrappers packed with meat and vegetable filling, so one bite and the juices burst out.

Boiled in the spicy broth, the dumplings soaked up that fiery soup and got even more savory, with a nutty flavor rising the more you chewed — even my mom admitted these dumplings were well made haha.
Chewy kalguksu noodles

After clearing out all the vegetables and meat, we added the kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) to boil, and the noodles were incredibly chewy!!! My mom and I ended up trying to analyze(?) how they made them haha. Between the two of us, we figured maybe starch powder was added to get that chewiness hahaha.

That springy texture held up while still soaking up plenty of broth — so hearty haha.
A satisfying finish, right down to the porridge
At the end, we added colorful vegetables, rice, egg, and dried seaweed flakes to the leftover broth to finish with porridge — my mom, who clearly said she was too full to eat any... how do you resist Korean dessert?? hahaha
One set meal brings out vegetables, meat, dumplings, kalguksu, and porridge — this much for this price!! Is this even real. Truly amazing value haha.
Why it was so good to bring my parents here
Coming back this time with my mom, it was just as satisfying as I'd hoped.

The self-bar spread is so generous, and with everything covered in the one set meal, the value is great too.

The atmosphere is comfortable enough for bringing older family members, so I'd recommend it as a great Byeollae restaurant for a meal with parents. It was so good that I'm already thinking about bringing my dad next time too 🌿 If you're looking for a good spot for a family gathering, I recommend Onjeongban!!
