Sokcho Korean restaurant squid sundae takeout: Hwangbuja Twigim

In short

Hwangbuja Twigim is a Korean restaurant in Sokcho’s Central Market, where I picked up two kinds of squid sundae to eat with my family at home. The regular version was soft and mild, while the nurungji version stayed crisp and nutty even after cooling slightly.

What takeout did I choose for my family at Sokcho Central Market?

On my trip to Sokcho, I stopped by Hwangbuja Twigim (황부자튀김) to pick up food to eat with my family. It is a regular stop for me whenever I visit Sokcho Central Market.

My family likes squid sundae (stuffed squid sausage), so we tend to buy it whenever we go to Sokcho. This time, I got takeout again so we could all eat it together at home.

Where is Hwangbuja Twigim, and what was it like?

According to the attached map, Hwangbuja Twigim is in units 26 and 27 of Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market. As I approached the shop, I could smell the savory aroma of food cooking on the griddle.

It was usually busy with customers whenever I visited. Still, I was always greeted kindly, so I left with my takeout in good spirits.

What did the regular squid sundae taste like?

This time, I chose two varieties: regular squid sundae and nurungji squid sundae, which I especially like.

When I got home, I spread out the takeout boxes on the living-room table. The savory smell drew my family over, too.

The squid sundae was generously filled and sliced into thick pieces, so even a few pieces felt satisfying. The regular squid sundae was cooked with a thick egg coating, making it soft and moist.

The squid was chewy without being tough. The glass noodles and vegetables inside came together in a mild filling, and it felt easy to share with my family.

Was the nurungji squid sundae still good after cooling?

Of the two, the nurungji squid sundae suited my taste better. It is cooked on a griddle with the outside pressed down until it is like nurungji (scorched rice).

With each bite, I noticed the crisp texture and nutty flavor of the outside first, which went well with the squid’s savory umami and moist filling.

It cooled slightly during the trip home from Sokcho. Even so, it still had its crispness and nutty flavor when I ate it. My family also said it was tasty despite having cooled down, and we all enjoyed it together.

This time, we had it as a family snack at home, but to my taste, it would also go well with a cold canned beer or as a late-night snack while traveling.
