Wonju gyukatsu restaurant: weekday Set 4 and mentaiko udon, Ichigyu

In short

Ichigyu Wonju is a gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) and steki (Japanese-style steak) restaurant on the first floor of the Lotte Cinema building in Musil-dong, Wonju. On an early weekday evening, the writer and her boyfriend ordered Set 4 (striploin gyukatsu, striploin steki and two drinks, ₩41,000) and mentaiko cream udon (₩14,000), and grilling the beef with butter on a small tabletop grill was a big part of the fun. The writer preferred the breaded striploin gyukatsu but was happy with both, and strongly recommends Ichigyu Wonju, mentaiko cream udon included.

First off, Ichigyu Wonju is in the Lotte Cinema building, so it was super easy to find! There's also plenty to browse nearby, like Lotte Cinema and Olive Young, so you can run your errands in Musil-dong and head straight over to eat. The access is really good, haha.

Is there a wait at Ichigyu Wonju on weekday evenings?

When we went early on a weekday evening it was relaxed, but by the time we finished eating it was almost full. Out front there was a picture menu, an umbrella stand, a spot to get water, and a waiting list too!

As expected of a Musil-dong favorite... there might be a wait, so keep that in mind!

Spacious, tidy interior of Ichigyu Wonju

Ichigyu Wonju atmosphere and seating

The restaurant was spacious, clean and pleasant, and by my rough count there were about 13 tables. There were other customers, so I couldn't take photos of the rest of the place.

They also have a baby chair, so it seems fine to bring a baby~ I'm also attaching a photo of the restroom password and Wi-Fi password notice!

Ichigyu Wonju menu and the Set 4 we ordered

The menu at Ichigyu Wonju includes gyukatsu, steki, teppanyaki (iron-griddle dishes), rice bowls and à la carte items, plus set menus. We ordered Set 4 (₩41,000), which comes with striploin gyukatsu, striploin steki and two drinks, and the mentaiko cream udon (₩14,000)~

The table grill and the review event

Each table at Ichigyu Wonju has a small grill plate for cooking your gyukatsu, with instructions on how to enjoy it best! If you do a review event, you can get daepyeon mochi (thinly sliced rice cake) and cheese to grill, so keep that in mind~

Drinks and rice refills

The Set 4 drinks came with a cup of ice, so we could enjoy them nice and cold! They had Zero Sprite-style cider and Coke Zero too, which was great :)

Rice comes in a small bowl like this, and I hear refills are available, so keep that in mind, haha.

Striploin gyukatsu vs striploin steki: what's the difference?

The difference between the striploin gyukatsu and striploin steki at Ichigyu Wonju is the breading. The steki and gyukatsu arrived looking absolutely delicious!

They both look so tempting!

  • If you want a crispy, savory bite like a pork cutlet ➡️ striploin gyukatsu
  • If you want the clean, mild flavor of grilled beef without breading ➡️ striploin steki

That's how I'd recommend them~~

How to grill it yourself with butter

At Ichigyu Wonju, you put butter on the grill plate first, then cook the steki and gyukatsu as much as you like. As they explained, after putting the butter on,

we grilled the steki and gyukatsu~ The gyukatsu sizzling away was so good, haha. Grilling it yourself lets you adjust the doneness to your own taste, and it's fun too, which made it even better~

The plate is hot, so be careful!!

Gyukatsu sauces including chili sauce, salt and wasabi

Wasabi is my top sauce pick

Ichigyu Wonju had a variety of sauces, including chili sauce, salt and wasabi, but my number one pick was wasabi! Mixing and matching the sauces was fun~

Put on top of rice, it's even more heavenly! I liked the striploin gyukatsu better than the striploin steki! But both get a 100 for taste!!

Mentaiko cream udon at Ichigyu Wonju

How is the mentaiko cream udon at Ichigyu Wonju?

The mentaiko cream udon (₩14,000) at Ichigyu Wonju has thick, rich cream, plump udon noodles, bonito flakes and finely chopped meat, and I totally recommend it. We ordered it as an extra when we were almost done with the steki and gyukatsu~

My boyfriend eats a lot, so that's why we added it. If you don't eat much, the steki and gyukatsu should be enough!

The combination of thick, rich cream and plump udon noodles was so good! With bonito flakes and chopped meat in it too, it was pure heaven! The cream was so good that it went well with rice too! I totally recommend this one as well~

Disposable dental floss at the Ichigyu Wonju counter

Disposable floss at the counter, and overall verdict

At the Ichigyu Wonju counter there's disposable dental floss, so if meat gets stuck in your teeth you can deal with it quickly, haha. The owner is so thoughtful~~

It was a day I was really satisfied with, eating delicious food in a nice atmosphere! If you're looking for a clean, tasty gyukatsu or tonkatsu place in Wonju, I highly recommend Ichigyu Wonju in Musil-dong!
