Oxtail stew and two rice bowls at a Jonggak beef bar: Umi Hoegwan
In short
Umi Hoegwan Jonggak Main Branch is a hanwoo (Korean beef) bar right in front of exits 4 and 5 of Jonggak Station, just behind the Bosingak Bell Pavilion in Jongno, Seoul. The braised oxtail stew (medium) costs 58,000 won, and the meat falls off the bone at a touch of the chopsticks — mixing rice into the soy-sauce broth was good enough to warrant a second bowl of rice. With a free hanwoo hangover ramen from the review event, one pot of oxtail stew at Umi Hoegwan makes a full dinner.

There aren't actually that many braised oxtail places in Seoul, but while looking around I found a perfect one for a Jonggak Station dinner! It's super close to the station, and the place itself is big and clean, which made me even happier — Umi Hoegwan Jonggak Main Branch.
How close is Umi Hoegwan Jonggak Main Branch to Jonggak Station?
Umi Hoegwan Jonggak Main Branch is right in view whether you come out of exit 4 or exit 5 of Jonggak Station. It's right behind Bosingak Bell Pavilion. Most restaurants around Jonggak Station get a weekday rush, but this place is packed even on weekends — I guess it's a popular spot for dates and gatherings around Jonggak too.

A wood-toned exterior with a hanok (traditional Korean house) feel, and the sign 'Umi Hoegwan' catches your eye right away. Photos of yukhoe (raw beef) perilla oil noodles, braised oxtail, chadolbagi yuksashimi and mungtigi are hung by the entrance, so you know at a glance it's a beef restaurant ☺️😊🥹
Inside Umi Hoegwan: room for a group dinner or a client meal
Inside Umi Hoegwan Jonggak Main Branch, the wood tones and hanji (traditional Korean paper) lantern lighting make it calm and clean — it feels like a quietly trendy Korean restaurant :)

The tables have generous spacing, so it's good for dates, group dinners or business meals, and each table has its own coat hook and spot for bags — such a thoughtful touch. Overall it's comfortable enough to sit and enjoy your food for a long time!
Side dishes and the review event at Umi Hoegwan
The basic side dishes come out neatly: seasoning sauce, radish pickle, and mul kimchi (watery radish kimchi). This radish pickle is seriously addictive..! (They're generous with refills too)

There's also a review event — leave a photo review with the keywords 'Jonggak restaurant, Jonggak bar' and you get a hangover remedy or hanwoo hangover ramen on the house. (The hangover ramen is worth a whopping ₩9,000 by itself — such a deal.)

Oxtail stew (medium), 58,000 won: why to start with the somyeon noodles
We ordered the braised oxtail (medium) 58.0 plus a bowl of rice! This place serves mungtigi, yukhoe and chadol yuksashimi with ultra-fresh hanwoo (Korean beef) butchered the same day, but they only sell 10 servings a day, so we went straight for the braised oxtail. The dish, piled high with chives, looked amazing. There are thin wheat noodles hidden inside, so I'd recommend eating those first :)

Big chunks of oxtail are piled with a mountain of chives and sprinkled with sesame seeds and chili flakes for extra depth. The soy-sauce seasoning is rich and soaked all the way through, so it goes well with both rice and drinks!
The oxtail was braised so soft that the meat just slid off with a touch of chopsticks. The chewy meat kept pulling me back in with all that rich seasoning, and mixing rice into the leftover broth made for one seriously satisfying meal. It tasted so good I just kept eating and ended up ordering two bowls of rice..

The free hanwoo hangover ramen
The hanwoo ramen from the review event was amazing too 👍 With rich beef broth and oxtail meat on top, it had a spicy, deep flavor that really stood out. The broth especially was so rich and full of beefy aroma that it made me want rice again too :)
It's been a while since I visited a great braised oxtail place, and I'm in such a good mood :)
