Yangsan noodle soup spot after Tongdosa buckwheat fields: Eonyang Dak

In short

Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch is a chicken kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant at 6 Tongdosa-ro, Habuk-myeon, Yangsan, Gyeongnam. Stopping by one evening after the Tongdosa buckwheat flower fields, the writer ordered chicken kalguksu, Eonyang-style kalguksu and a small boiled pork (suyuk) platter, and found the thick perilla-and-chicken broth impressive and the plain kimchi from the self-serve corner the surprise favourite. With free parking right beside the restaurant, Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch is an easy stop on the drive back from Tongdosa.

On the day we visited the Tongdosa buckwheat flower fields, I found myself craving warm kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) for dinner, so we stopped by Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch. My partner ordered the chicken kalguksu and I went with the Eonyang-style kalguksu, and we also added a small pork platter (suyuk) to make it a filling meal. I'd come looking for kalguksu near Tongdosa, and while the rich broth was great, it was surprisingly the kimchi that stuck with me.

A rich perilla broth and chicken that worked beautifully together, plus kalguksu paired with kimchi that was genuinely delicious.

Parking was easy since it was right next to the restaurant

We came by car, and having the parking lot right next to the restaurant made things easy. We'd stopped by after visiting Tongdosa and were getting around by car, so not having to worry about parking made a great first impression. The exterior and sign were visible right from the road.

What the restaurant looks like inside

Walking inside, the restaurant was bigger than I'd expected.

Spacious, neatly kept restaurant interior

Overall it was neatly kept and felt pleasant and spacious. The staff were also friendly, so we got to start the meal in a good mood.

The menu and the three dishes we ordered

That day at Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch we ordered three things: chicken kalguksu, Eonyang-style kalguksu, and a small pork platter (suyuk). The menu was laid out on the wall with photos, which was handy to check before and after sitting down.

My partner chose the chicken kalguksu and I ordered the Eonyang-style kalguksu. We considered just having the noodles, but wanted to try the pork too, so we added a small size on the side.

Self-serve kimchi: the surprise star of the meal

Side dishes were self-serve, so you could take as much as you liked. What I remember most was the kimchi — there was spicy kimchi and regular kimchi. The spicy one was too much for me, so my partner ate that while I stuck mostly to the regular kimchi. It went so well with the kalguksu that I kept taking a bite of noodles, then a bite of kimchi. I'd come for the main dish, but ended up remembering the kimchi just as much. It made me wonder if this place was secretly a kimchi restaurant too.

The full table, from chicken kalguksu to boiled pork

Once everything we ordered arrived, the table filled up nicely.

Two bowls of pale, milky-looking kalguksu, the pork, kimchi, and side dishes were all laid out — it was finally time to dig in.

Chicken kalguksu with a rich perilla broth

The chicken kalguksu at Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch came with both chicken thigh and breast meat. The broth was on the rich side, and the perilla seed and chicken combined for a deep flavor.

Having the chicken in there made it different from just noodles and broth — it felt like a hearty, satisfying bowl.

Kalguksu noodles lifted out along with the broth

The noodles eaten together with the broth naturally carried that rich flavor along with them.

The broth where chicken and perilla seed came together was one of the standout points of this meal.

Eonyang-style kalguksu: how it tasted

The Eonyang-style kalguksu I had was also delicious, with a rich broth. Aside from not having chicken in it, I felt it was overall similar in flavor to the chicken kalguksu.

Without chicken, I could focus purely on the noodles and broth, and the rich broth paired well with the noodles.

Eonyang-style kalguksu topped with regular kimchi

Adding a piece of the regular kimchi on top made the combination especially satisfying. For soupy dishes like kalguksu, the kimchi quietly matters a lot, doesn't it? The kimchi was so good that day that I kept eating it alongside my meal the whole time.

Boiled pork (small) with a herbal, medicinal note

The pork platter (small) came out as thinly sliced meat on a plate.

Probably because it's prepared Eonyang-style, the pork had a slightly medicinal-herb taste along with a salty note.

Sitting between the two bowls of kalguksu and taking a bite of pork here and there made for a nice combination of dishes. I also dipped a piece of pork into the accompanying sauce.

Rather than just finishing off with kalguksu alone, mixing in the pork along the way changed up the flow of flavors in a good way.

Florit's verdict on Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch

We stopped by after visiting Tongdosa and ended up having a genuinely delicious meal.

The chicken kalguksu came with chicken thigh and breast, and the rich broth where perilla seed and chicken came together was especially memorable.

The Eonyang-style kalguksu I had also had a great rich broth, and it tasted even better paired with the regular kimchi.

The pork had an impressive medicinal-herb note and salty flavor, and it went well alongside the kalguksu too.

Above all, having the parking lot right next to the restaurant made it easy to visit by car, and the spacious, clean interior made for a pleasant experience. With friendly service on top of it all, it was a meal I found myself thinking back to even after our visit to Tongdosa.
