Dongseong-ro Korean restaurant with a fried-egg self-bar: Cafe Dongi

Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building off Dongseong-ro 3-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu, serving each tray over an individual charcoal-style grill. On a shopping date, the couple ordered the grandma's jjukkumi (spicy baby octopus) stir-fry set and the fire-grilled jeyuk (spicy pork) set, swapping the stew to kimchi jjigae for ₩1,000 extra, plus a tasting-size tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and made full use of the self-bar with fried eggs, five-grain rice, gim (seasoned seaweed), barley gangjeong (puffed barley bars) and hetgae tea. Cafe Dongi is a solid pick near Dongseong-ro and Banwoldang for filling, easy-on-the-stomach home-style Korean food.

Date-night drive to Marine City for a crab set for two: Deodo Gejang

Deodo Gejang Marine City is a Korean crab restaurant on the first floor of the Hanil Orduy building in Marine City, Haeundae, Busan. Stopping in during a couple's drive around Haeundae, we ordered the set for two, which brings spicy monkfish-and-octopus bulgogi (ajju bulgogi), soy-marinated yellow crab and nutrient pot rice, plus enough side dishes to fill the table. The yellow crab was neither fishy nor overly salty, the bulgogi carried a manageable heat, and the closing bowl of sungnyung made Deodo Gejang an easy pick for a date or a family meal.

Jambon-beurre and Dubai salt bread at Zoblack, a Haeundae bakery

Zoblack is a salt bread bakery on the first floor of the Marine City Zi mall in Haeundae, Busan. More than 20 kinds of salt bread — plain from 2,800 won, plus jambon-beurre, truffle and Dubai — and baked sweets fill the showcase, and the boxed breads tasted crisp on top with a buttery, crackly base at home. Go at 10:00, when the fresh bread comes out, and the popular flavors are still there to choose from.

Kkomak Manse Pyeongtaek Manse-ro Main Branch is a fresh cockle specialty restaurant on Manse-ro in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi, and it runs only this one location with no chain branches. With a wide private parking lot and a Catch Table waiting kiosk, Kkomak Manse is an easy stop even at peak hours.
