How I came to think about fate and tarot

When I was young, I thought there was no such thing as fate or destiny and that life simply flowed along. But as I get older, I find myself thinking that things are determined differently for each person.

People say you cannot change your fate, but I think it can shift little by little through substitution, depending on where I am, what I do, and how I do it. You know what people often say: “At least I got the bad luck out of the way.” In the past, when something unhappy happened, I would only resent it—why did this happen to me?—then hide away in a cave, completely dazed, without moving from the spot. I also occasionally go for tarot readings or saju fortune readings, and I tend to believe in them to some extent. Having lived this long, I have found that there really are periods of luck. During some stretches, I reach my goals easily without much effort; at other times, even when I struggle desperately and work hard, things only turn negative, as if I have fallen into a swamp.

When things turn negative, I often get soaked in a sense of defeat: I am completely ruined now; am I someone who just cannot make it? But now I know that time is medicine.

As I came to understand deeply the saying adults repeated like a habit—that time is medicine—I now have my own three-month rule. Even this moment will feel less sharp after three months. And then, fill it with good memories; fill it with memories of succeeding, even in small situations.

Starting tarot again as a hobby

These days, I have a new interest: tarot. Tarot is said to be a form of consultation that uses cards to reflect the past and present, then prepares for the future based on that.

In my early twenties, I used to visit tarot cafés and get readings often. I would ask when I would date, how my job prospects were, and what luck the year held. If the reading was positive, I took it positively; if it was negative, I lived cautiously, as though walking on thin ice.
