Why I've been back to Gang Galbitang in Seomyeon 5+ times for solo meals

Gang Galbitang (강갈비탕) is a rib soup place in Seomyeon, Busan that the writer has visited well over 5 times. It's the spot that comes to mind when you need a filling meal, want to cure a hangover, or just want to eat quietly, so the writer confidently recommends it to anyone looking for a solo meal in Seomyeon.

When you write a food blog, plenty of places get just one visit, but the really good ones you naturally keep returning to, right? Honestly, I can't think of a place I've visited as consistently as Gang Galbitang, haha. By my standards, a total legit great restaurant!

Solo seats where no one makes you feel awkward

Gang Galbitang is right in the middle of Seomyeon, with fast table turnover and a layout that's easy to visit alone, so there's no pressure. Lots of people really do eat solo here, and there are separate solo seats, so you don't have to worry about anyone's glances.

That's probably why it's popular with busy office workers and other solo diners. I drop by whenever I have errands in Seomyeon, and I honestly wonder whether there's any better place for a solo meal in Seomyeon, hehe.

Side dishes: chogeoksam and self-bar dried radish

The basic sides are kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), chili pepper, raw garlic and doenjang (soybean paste), plus, unusually, chogeoksam (Chinese artichoke). The self-bar has dried radish, which goes great with the rib soup.

And here comes the clear-broth galbitang at last... I swear I recognize that smell and it instantly puts me in a good mood, haha. The chogeoksam has a lovely crunch, so you keep picking at it while eating the soup. Haha. The dried radish is salty and chewy, a surprisingly nice treat! Every side goes well with the soup, so I was happy with the whole lineup.

A hearty-looking bowl of Gang Galbitang

Every time I see it, the look of this bowl is really hearty.

Gang Galbitang with huge whole rib bones

How big are the ribs at Gang Galbitang?

The size of the ribs alone sets Gang Galbitang apart. It's not a few little pieces of rib: whole, hefty rib bones sit in the bowl, and just looking at them is satisfying, haha.

Adding medium noodles is a must

When you go to Gang Galbitang, definitely add the medium noodles, haha. The soft noodles soak up the rib soup broth and are really, really good.

At first I figured the soup alone would be plenty, but after adding noodles once, I completely changed my mind. Hahaha.

Extra medium noodles soaked in rib soup broth

The soft texture of the noodles meeting the rib soup broth is a total treat! Personally, I think adding the medium noodles is almost a must when visiting Gang Galbitang... eating noodles in the leftover broth after the soup doubles how full you feel. ^^ Haha. These days a meal without the noodles feels somehow empty.

How tender is the meat at Gang Galbitang?

The meat separates softly with just a light touch of your chopsticks. It really feels like it melts in your mouth.

There's hardly any tough or dry part, and thanks to that tenderness, Gang Galbitang just naturally comes to mind whenever I eat solo in Seomyeon, you know...

A spoonful of rib soup with glass noodles

There are glass noodles and ginseng too

The soup also comes with dangmyeon (glass noodles), which keeps every bite varied, haha. Carbs and protein together, nice nutrition~

A small piece of ginseng in the rib soup

The ginseng is tiny, so it's not overwhelming, haha. Eaten with the meat, no bitterness left ^^

And you have to eat it again with the chogeoksam and kkakdugi... The side dishes at Gang Galbitang are good too, so I always end up getting refills, haha.

Clear yet quietly spicy Gang Galbitang broth

Is the broth clear or spicy?

At first glance the broth is clear, so you might think it's a mild, light style, but once you taste it, a quiet heat builds up. It's not too harsh, yet it has a sharp kick, so the spoon keeps going back in.

That makes it great as hangover food and a perfect match for a drink! Maybe that's why, besides solo diners like me in Seomyeon, I sometimes see people who come to drink alone. The clear yet spicy broth makes you finish every last drop.

A quick meal in Seomyeon, and why I became a regular

The only place where you can clear a whole bowl like this, good for solo dining in Seomyeon, is Gang Galbitang... The solo seats are well set up and the turnover is fast, so the wait isn't long. That's why it naturally comes to mind when I need to sort out a quick meal in Seomyeon.

I've visited many times and always left satisfied, and I think I'll keep coming back, haha. Once a regular, always a regular...
