After splashing around at the pension pool, evening rolled in — and while a lot of people fire up the barbecue when staying at a pension, honestly, I'm not a big fan of cooking at a pension.😂

You have to bring the ingredients, prep them, eat, and then wash up and clean everything afterward?! After a full day of swimming, I just wanted to eat something delicious and relax.

So once again we decided to eat out for dinner. We'd had pasta for lunch, so Korean food sounded right for dinner.

Looking for somewhere about 5 minutes by car from the pension, we ended up at Neulbom, a Korean restaurant near Bomun Lake Resort in Gyeongju.

Where is Neulbom in Gyeongju, and what are its hours and parking?

Neulbom is a Korean restaurant at 107 Bobul-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It's open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 09:00 to 21:00, closed every Thursday, and parking is free.

With over 20 years of history as a Korean restaurant near Bomun Lake Resort, I headed over with high expectations. Being close to the pension made it an easy, stress-free trip.

One thing I liked as soon as we pulled into the parking lot: it's genuinely huge. It's also right on the road, so it wasn't hard to find. Parking stress is a real thing on trips, so not having to worry about it at Neulbom was great.

What comes with the snail hotpot rice set for two at Neulbom?

What we ordered at Neulbom was the ureong sotbap (freshwater snail hot-pot rice) set for two. Even though we only ordered one menu item, the table filled up with banchan, beef bulgogi and grilled fish.

We sat down and placed our order — the ureong sotbap set for two! Honestly, I didn't expect one menu order to fill the whole table.

But then the dishes kept coming one after another... to the point where I thought, "Wait, all of this is from one order?" The table was completely full.

So many side dishes on this Gyeongju table! True to a proper Korean restaurant, the banchan alone was generous.

There was so much variety, and everything was plated so neatly that just looking at it made me want to dig in.

It turns out Neulbom, a Korean restaurant near Bulguksa in Gyeongju, prepares every ingredient by hand and insists on fresh produce. Maybe that's why every side dish felt like a careful, homemade meal.

Wrap vegetables are self-serve, side dishes refilled on request

At Neulbom, you can help yourself to as many wrap vegetables as you want from the self-serve bar, while other side dishes are refilled by staff on request. As someone who loves ssam (wraps), the self-serve bar was especially welcome — I could grab as much as I needed without feeling self-conscious and eat my fill~ 😊

Is Neulbom good for family dinners and group meals?

Neulbom's dining room was quite spacious, and there seemed to be a second floor too — with that much room, it looked like a good fit for family dinners, group gatherings, or meals for tourists alike.

If there's a wait, you can use the Table-ing app, and after your meal you can enjoy a cup of coffee, which makes for a nice, relaxed wrap-up to the meal! And then, finally, all the food arrived.

The beef bulgogi just needs a quick sear on the tabletop grill, and everything else came ready to eat right away. Seeing the table so fully spread out made me weirdly happy.

How do the snail doenjang, beef bulgogi and nurungji taste?

The best thing about Neulbom's ureong sotbap was the ureong doenjang (fermented soybean stew with freshwater snails). The savory doenjang flavor combined with the chewy texture of the ureong made a bowl of rice disappear in no time.

First, we dig into the stone-pot rice. Hahaha. The rice gets scooped out into a bowl, and hot water is poured into the stone pot to make nurungji (scorched rice).

And the first thing I reached for was the ureong doenjang! This was genuinely delicious. The savory doenjang flavor plus the chewy texture of the ureong paired so well with the rice. It was the kind of food that makes a whole bowl of rice vanish. !😆

The beef bulgogi was sweet-savory and tender, pairing well with rice, and the grilled fish that came alongside was tasty too. The fish had a light seasoning on it, giving it a different charm from plain grilled fish. And finally, the highlight of stone-pot rice — the nurungji! Finishing off with the warm, savory scorched rice left me feeling completely full. After scraping every last bit out of the stone pot... I couldn't help but say dinner was a hit tonight.😂

Neulbom's table after finishing the meal

If you're looking for a place for a family dinner or group meal in Gyeongju's Bomun Lake Resort area, or if you just want an easy, no-fuss dinner like we did, Neulbom is worth a stop. We filled up nicely and headed back to the pension to relax comfortably. And once again, the lesson from traveling is proven true... food someone else cooks for you always tastes the best...!😆
