I came here because I wanted a hearty meal before an evening shift!

Restaurant visited for a hearty meal

I visited Jeontong Sigol Chueotang Ulsan Mugeo Branch (전통시골추어탕 울산무거점), near the back gate of Ulsan University. The portions were generous and the value was great, so I could see why so many people look it up as a good Korean restaurant around Ulsan University and Mugeo-dong :)

What we tried first, and the prices

We ordered loach soup for ₩9,000, dumpling soup + kalguksu for ₩6,000, and spicy stir-fried pork for ₩8,000!

Inside Jeontong Sigol Chueotang

The interior was more spacious than I expected and had a comfortable feel,

with that simple, friendly feeling unique to restaurants near a university! It felt like a place where eating alone would not feel awkward at all.

A varied menu, from loach soup to kalguksu

Restaurant menu including loach soup and duruchigi

As the restaurant name suggests, loach soup is the signature dish, but there were lots of options too, including duruchigi (spicy stir-fried meat), kimchi stew, and kalguksu (knife-cut noodles)! It looked like a great place for Ulsan University students to have a filling, affordable meal.

A satisfying spread, starting with the side dishes

Six side dishes including kimchi and japchae

There were six basic side dishes: kimchi, seasoned shredded radish, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), sweet black beans, seasoned cucumber, and pink sausage. Seeing japchae and pink sausage made me weirdly nostalgic, haha. The whole spread felt like a home-cooked meal, which made it even more endearing.

Hearty loach soup that reminded me of my maternal grandmother

A hearty bowl of loach soup

The loach soup I ordered! I chose it because I wanted something nourishing and filling, and from the very first bite, it tasted so familiar. Its savory, comforting flavor reminded me of the loach soup my maternal grandmother used to make, so of course I started thinking of her too.

Nutty, generous dumpling soup with kalguksu

Generous serving of dumpling soup and kalguksu

My companion’s dumpling soup + kalguksu had the kind of huge portion you would expect from a restaurant near a university—I was honestly surprised!

It had a subtle nutty aroma from sesame oil and was easy to slurp down. At just ₩6,000, I would recommend it as a great-value choice when looking for Korean food in Mugeo-dong.

The spicy stir-fried pork I remember most

The most memorable spicy stir-fried pork

And personally, the star of the day was the spicy stir-fried pork!

A plate of savory spicy stir-fried pork

It was pleasantly punchy and full of savory umami, the kind of flavor that kept me reaching for more.

It was totally my style, and with rice, it was really, really delicious!

Ramen noodles served with the spicy stir-fried pork

Orders for two or more come with ramen noodles too, and eating them like stir-fried ramen made them another little treat. It is a flavor students would probably love, so I especially recommend it to anyone looking for a good restaurant near Ulsan University.

For when you are craving a home-cooked meal

Overall, the portions were generous and filling—it truly felt like food made by a grandmother, or a meal set out by Mom.

A generous, comforting Korean meal

If you live alone because of school or work, this could be a lovely place to stop by when you miss home cooking. For people like me who often miss regular meal times, being able to visit without worrying about a break time is another plus!
