A Jangsan seafood favorite, revisited after a while

Exterior of Sambari Jangsan Branch on the revisit

Not long ago I went back to Sambari Jangsan Branch, near Jangsan in Haeundae, with a friend. I had such good memories from my first visit that I wanted to return, and once again the meal beat my expectations.

Sambari Jangsan Branch visited in early summer

It was early summer, and it was quite hot outside. But the moment I stepped into Sambari Jangsan Branch, cool air-conditioning greeted me. I came for good food in hot weather, and a comfortable interior made me happy from the very start.

What is the interior of Sambari Jangsan Branch like?

The food is good, but the atmosphere at Sambari Jangsan Branch is impressive too. Across the ceiling and walls are displayed fishing gear, basins (darai), and props that look like something the haenyeo (women divers) would actually use. It felt like a friendly eatery by a seaside harbor.

The soft lighting helped too. Not too bright and not too dark, it made the whole place feel relaxed.

There were also witty, humorous phrases posted here and there around the restaurant. My friend and I read them and laughed while waiting for the food, which made it even more fun.

What free starter snacks come with the meal?

At Sambari Jangsan Branch, starter snacks arrived as soon as we sat down. We got silkworm pupae (beondegi), shelled peanuts, and kelp with chogochujang (sweet-and-sour chili sauce), and the spread was more generous than I expected.

Dipping the kelp in the chili sauce especially woke up my appetite. The silkworm pupae went well with drinks, and I kept reaching for the peanuts. When the starter snacks are good, your expectations for the food go up, and Sambari Jangsan Branch satisfied me right from the start.

How big is the large steamed clam pot?

This time I ordered the large steamed clam pot (원고 사이즈). The first thing I thought when it arrived was "that's a LOT of food." A huge pot was piled high with scallops, squid, shrimp, mushrooms, napa cabbage, bok choy and more, with steam rising off it. It looked so appetizing.

Steam kept rising even while I took photos, and just looking at it made my mouth water. A big whole squid sat on top and really caught the eye. I was also impressed to see a staff member cut it up so it was easy to eat.

Cheese corn, a surprise highlight

Cheese corn came alongside the steamed clams at Sambari Jangsan Branch. The cheese stretched out in long strands, which looked delicious just by itself. Sweet corn and savory cheese is a combination that never fails, whenever you eat it.

Taking a bite of cheese corn between bites of seafood had its own charm, and it was nice for changing up the flavor now and then. Personally, I was really pleased that they serve cheese corn with it.

Menu variety and how the prices feel

Looking over the menu at Sambari Jangsan Branch, I found far more variety than I expected: not just steamed clams but grilled clams, assorted seafood dishes, and soups and stews. I thought I'd like to try the other dishes on my next visit.

The print was large and easy to read, and the menu was neatly laid out, so ordering was easy. Considering the portion, quality and service, the prices felt perfectly reasonable.
