Today I'm bringing you a review of Jongchagyeok Gunsan Branch, a spot in Gunsan where you can enjoy a totally different vibe alongside juicy, flavorful meat!!

A solid menu board and a killer lineup of side dishes

The main menu has mungteong salt-grilled pork, marbled pork belly, jeong-gabrisal, tong-hangjeongsal (pork jowl), and beef short rib! On the side menu there's Haenam Station yeolmu kimchi noodles, Italy Station cheese egg custard, and the Terminus lunchbox/fried rice, and more!

The basic side dishes include salted pollock roe, wasabi, a house special sauce, aged kimchi, perilla leaves, and gim (dried seaweed). Meat and gim together — my expectations were already sky-high before I even took a bite! And the kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) that comes as a free side even has meat in it, that's insane!

How to eat it: gabrisal, pork belly and beef short rib on roasted gim with jeotgal

At Jongchagyeok Gunsan Branch we tried the perfectly browned gabrisal, pork belly, and beef short rib! They come pre-grilled, so the grilling is flawless and the juices stay locked inside — the texture is so soft and chewy!!

I followed the eating tip printed on every table: put a nutty piece of Korean pork on a lightly toasted piece of gim, pile on squid jeotgal (or salted pollock roe), and wrap it up — it's genuinely a delicacy! The salty jeotgal and the savory umami of the gim go so well with the meat's juices that I kept wrapping it this exact way over and over 😋

And a tip!!! Toasting the gim first makes it even more, more, more delicious!! haha

If you run out of side dishes, there's a self-serve bar, or you can just ask for more! (The shiitake mushroom wasabi wasn't at the self-serve bar, so I asked for it separately and got a refill, haha.)

Side dish prices and how they taste at Jongchagyeok

Great value!!! The side menu!

1. Italy Station cheese egg custard (4,900 won)

A bomb-sized egg custard puffing up over the edge of the earthenware pot, topped with mozzarella cheese and parsley. Nutty and soft, it's perfect for building up appetite before the meat arrives.

2. Haenam Station yeolmu kimchi noodles (6,900 won)

A visual treat: slushy ice floating in the broth, chewy somyeon noodles, well-fermented yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), and egg on top! It cuts right through the greasiness of the meat with a refreshing, spicy-tangy kick.

3. Terminus lunchbox (2,900 won)

A nostalgic tin lunchbox piled high with fried rice, egg, perilla leaf, and a generous heap of gim flakes — great to eat alongside the meat.
