Gomtang lunch with rice and broth refills in Wangsimni: Geumnyeong

In short

Geumnyeong Gomtang is a Korean beef gomtang (beef bone soup) restaurant on Wangsimni-ro 20-gil in Seongdong, Seoul. Arriving a little before the lunch rush, the writer ordered one gomtang and one minari gomtang, and each bowl came with close to a full serving of rice, with both rice and broth free to refill. The mumallaengi (dried radish) side dish paired especially well with the soup, and the only thing to watch is the ttukbaegi (earthenware bowl), which arrives extremely hot.

Arriving at Geumnyeong Gomtang in Wangsimni before the lunch rush

Geumnyeong Gomtang is a Korean beef gomtang (beef bone soup) restaurant at 11 Wangsimni-ro 20-gil, Seongdong-gu, Seoul. Meeting up with Juju after a while, I'd been craving warm guk-bap (soup with rice) for a bit, and since I heard this place is pretty popular in Wangsimni, I went a little earlier than lunchtime just in case!

The inside feels like a converted house, with seating on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The 2nd floor is pretty spacious with plenty of tables, so we could sit more comfortably than I expected.

The 2nd floor tables are roomy enough to be great for a lunch visit, but also nice for anyone wanting to enjoy a relaxed drink with their meal 😊

What's on the menu at Geumnyeong Gomtang: gomtang, minari gomtang and drinking dishes

Geumnyeong Gomtang doesn't just have gomtang and minari gomtang — there's also a solid lineup of anju (drinking snacks), so it works whether you're coming for a proper meal or for an evening drink. The menu isn't lopsided toward one or the other, which made it feel good for everything from a lunch meal to a casual drinking session!

Seokbakji, geotjeori, and mumallaengi side dishes served in an earthenware bowl

The side dishes: seokbakji, geotjeori and mumallaengi

The side dishes — seokbakji (radish kimchi), geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi), and mumallaengi (dried radish) — come out neatly in a small earthenware bowl. Personally, the mumallaengi was so good I kept reaching for it. Eating it with the guk-bap, it paired surprisingly well!

Gomtang vs minari gomtang: how the two bowls taste

The base broth for both the gomtang and the minari gomtang felt pretty similar.

Gomtang topped generously with green onion

The gomtang had a generous amount of green onion, giving off a subtle onion aroma, and the minari gomtang — of course! — came out exactly as I'd pictured it haha. The minari (water dropwort) fragrance really came through and the flavor was clean, which personally satisfied me.

Free rice and broth refills, and a very hot ttukbaegi

At Geumnyeong Gomtang, both the rice and the broth are refillable, so if it's not enough you can get more. The rice is already mixed into the soup, and the portion was quite generous — it seemed like nearly a full bowl of rice!

That said, the ttukbaegi (earthenware bowl) itself gets really hot, so be careful when it's brought to you or when you touch the bowl! 🔥
