Seoul Korean BBQ in Yangjae-dong: beef and pork fresh galbi at

In short

Gukgojip is a fresh galbi (unmarinated short rib) restaurant in Yangjae-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, about a 3-minute walk from Yangjae Station. The writer ordered beef fresh galbi and pork fresh galbi together, alternating juicy tenderness with chewy bite, then closed the meal with the house sides of biji-jjigae (soybean pulp stew) and green onion kimchi plus a bowl of hanwoo beef bone broth ramyeon. Location, side dishes, meat quality and the closing noodles all hold up, making Gukgojip a solid pick for a group dinner near Yangjae Station.

Doesn't it always happen that when the weather turns chilly or your energy dips, you suddenly crave nicely grilled, savory meat? Today I want to introduce a Yangjae meat restaurant that I visited recently and completely fell for. If you've got a gathering or dinner planned near Yangjae, this is a place you'll want to keep an eye on. It's the Yangjae Station favorite, Gukgojip (국고집)!

How long is the walk from Yangjae Station to Gukgojip?

Gukgojip is a super-close-to-the-station meat restaurant, just about a 3-minute walk from Yangjae Station. The address is 14 Nambusunhwan-ro 355-gil, 1st floor, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

The taste of the meat matters, of course, but location really is key when picking a meeting spot. Once you exit the station and turn into the alley, it's easy to find — even if you tend to get lost, you won't have any trouble here.

With such great transit access, it's a perfect spot for a dinner gathering with a drink or two. That said, because of the location, dedicated parking may be somewhat limited or tight. If you're planning to drive, I'd recommend calling ahead to check parking availability, or scoping out a nearby public parking lot beforehand.

Gukgojip side dishes: biji-jjigae and green onion kimchi

Gukgojip's basic side dishes include a savory biji-jjigae (soybean pulp stew) and tangy green onion kimchi. It was neat and tidy, plain and simple.

Once you're seated and order, the side dishes start coming out one by one — and this is where Gukgojip's real charm shows. These aren't your average meat-restaurant banchan; each one feels like it was made with real care.

In particular, the savory and soft biji-jjigae served as a default is absolutely perfect for whetting your appetite before the main meat arrives.

Alongside it comes a nicely fermented, tangy green onion kimchi — and this kimchi is seriously something else. It cuts right through the richness of the meat while doubling the savory depth, an MVP side dish. Thanks to these clean, well-made banchan, my expectations were already sky-high before the meat even showed up.

What is it like to order beef and pork fresh galbi together?

At Gukgojip I ordered beef fresh galbi and pork fresh galbi together. Beef fresh galbi brought soft, juicy richness, while pork fresh galbi had a chewier texture — the two had distinctly different characters, which made alternating between them great fun.

Most people go for seasoned galbi, but true meat lovers have to try fresh, unseasoned galbi to enjoy the meat's natural flavor, right? Haha.

The moment the meat hit the grill, the savory aroma spread and my mouth was watering instantly.

The beef fresh galbi had just the right amount of marbling — the second you bit in, the juices burst and it melted softly away. Superb texture.

The pork fresh galbi grilled next was clean-tasting yet chewy, with a wonderful savory flavor. Beef gave me softness, pork gave me chew and savoriness — there was never a moment I got tired of it.

The meat quality itself was so good that even a light dip in salt was plenty delicious, and paired with the green onion kimchi I mentioned earlier, it was endless — I couldn't stop eating!

Finishing with hanwoo beef bone broth ramyeon

Gukgojip's closing dish is hanwoo (Korean beef) bone broth ramyeon. Simmered with a rich hanwoo bone broth base, the soup is deeply savory and refreshing.

Even if you're already stuffed from the meat, leaving without trying this would be a genuine regret. You have to finish with the 'hanwoo bone broth ramyeon,' one of Gukgojip's highlights, to complete the meal. The moment you take a sip of the broth, its deep savory flavor fills your whole mouth.

It cleanses your palate after the richness of the meat while leaving your stomach warm and satisfyingly full. The noodles were also cooked to a nice chewy texture, so I could enjoy the meal happily right down to the last bite.
