Cheonan chicken stew with three eggs in the pot: Sottture Dakdoritang

I wanted to eat plenty of chicken in a spicy broth in Cheonan and properly finish it off with fried rice, so I went to Sottture Dakdoritang.

The whole chicken comes loaded with potatoes, mushrooms, scallions and more, and once the broth reduces down, you get to finish with fried rice — great for a filling one-meal outing. If you're looking for dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew) in Seongjeong-dong, this might be worth keeping in mind, so I'm recording it here.

It's across from Lotte Mart in Seongjeong-dong, and there's a parking lot behind the Gwangje Mountain OB/GYN building, so it was fine to visit by car too.

Eating the whole chicken pot with three eggs

What we ordered that day was the whole chicken (dakhanmari)!

Big chunks of chicken came with potatoes, scallions, mushrooms and more, so it looked pretty generous from the start. The side dishes come out varied too, and you can refill them at the self-serve bar.

There was a cute egg sitting on top of the pot, which was kind of a nice visual point for photos haha. It's normally just one, but I ordered extra for a total of three!

Not just the chicken — potatoes, mushrooms and scallions all get to simmer along with the broth, making it a good dish to share among a group.

As the broth boils, the flavor seeps into the ingredients, so it tastes better simmered a bit longer than at first.

They tell you to simmer it about 3 more minutes after it's served, but if you want it really at a full boil it takes over 5 minutes! With the chicken and all the ingredients bubbling away, we could keep eating warm the whole time at the table.

Finishing with self-cooked cheese fried rice

With dishes like dakdoritang or whole chicken, it's always a shame when there's broth left over. So the last item that day was self-cooked fried rice 🍚

We made the fried rice while the leftover broth and ingredient flavors were still soaked in, and with cheese piled generously on top at the end, it looked delicious just from appearance alone.

If you spread the rice out flat and press it down as you eat, there's the fun of scraping up the slightly crispy bits stuck to the bottom.

Eating the chicken heartily with the broth, then filling up on carbs with fried rice at the end — it really felt like a proper meal!

Personally, I like finishing dakdoritang or whole chicken with fried rice, so that day too I ate it all up to the very end haha.
