Seonji ttaro-gukbap and somyeon seolleongtang in Daegu: Hanwoojang

In short

Hanwoojang is a 24-hour seolleongtang (ox bone soup) and gukbap restaurant on Gukchaebosang-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu, on the way to Manggyeonggwan Theater in Dongseong-ro. The order was seolleongtang and ttaro-gukbap (seonji gukbap), eaten with fresh geotjeori kimchi and side dishes from the self-serve bar: the ttaro-gukbap came with firm, chewy seonji (congealed ox blood) in a spicy broth, while the seolleongtang used somyeon noodles instead of glass noodles for a cleaner, lighter bowl. Hanwoojang is an easy place for a quick meal before a movie.

Side dishes and the self-serve bar at Hanwoojang

When the gukbap comes out, the first side dishes are kimchi, kkakdugi, and onion, and if you need more, use the self-serve bar! It's kept neat and tidy — everything is there, with separate plates for each side dish.

Pepper, chili powder, and salt shakers on the table

What's on the menu at Hanwoojang?

Every table has pepper, chili powder, and salt. Add them to your gukbap as needed~ At Hanwoojang in Dongseong-ro, Daegu, seolleongtang is the main dish, but there are other gukbap options too, including oxtail gomtang, doganitang, and yangtang. They also have suyuk, so it's a good spot for older folks to have a meal and a drink with friends, haha.

We ordered seolleongtang and ttaro-gukbap~ Think of ttaro-gukbap as seonji gukbap! There's also a large size available for the seolleongtang~!

Basic side dishes: kimchi, kkakdugi, and onion

Fresh geotjeori-style kimchi

You need to cut the kimchi before eating~ It's delicious! It has that just-made geotjeori (fresh, unfermented kimchi) feel! I tend to prefer fresh kimchi over aged kimchi at gukbap places, haha, so this was tasty and I liked it.

Hanwoojang's ttaro-gukbap is a seonji gukbap

Hanwoojang's ttaro-gukbap turned out to be seonji gukbap! Take out the seonji and it's basically the same as a plain beef gukbap~ This was my first time trying seonji gukbap, and at Hanwoojang it was delicious. The texture of the seonji was chewy, haha. The broth was spicy and rich in flavor.

There's a ton of seonji in it too! If you like seonji gukbap, I think you'd really enjoy visiting Hanwoojang, a well-known spot in Dongseong-ro, Daegu. Besides the seonji gukbap and seolleongtang we ordered, there's also suyuk and various other soups, so I thought it would be a good place for older folks to come have a daytime drink.

Hanwoojang's seolleongtang with thin meat slices and somyeon noodles

Seolleongtang with somyeon noodles instead of glass noodles

The seolleongtang tastes even better if you season it with salt and pepper, and it comes with thin slices of meat and somyeon noodles. At Hanwoojang, they use somyeon instead of glass noodles~ It's light and delicious! If you're a big eater, ordering the large size would be a good idea.

It's a great spot for a simple meal, easy to visit since it's right in the heart of Daegu, and being right in front of Manggyeonggwan makes it perfect for a bite before watching a movie. Highly recommend Hanwoojang, a well-known spot in Dongseong-ro, Daegu!
