Suyeong pork barbecue for two: Donbegi Gwang-an Branch

In short

Donbegi Gwang-an Branch is a pork barbecue restaurant in Suyeong, Busan, where we ordered a couples’ platter after a walk at Gwangalli Beach. The crisp yet juicy shoulder rack and ogyeopsal with pickled mushrooms stood out, and the spacious, divided seating made it comfortable for a date meal.

After a date-like walk along Gwangalli Beach, we stopped by Donbegi Gwang-an Branch (돈베기 광안점). The two of us ordered the couples’ platter, which came with shoulder rack and ogyeopsal (pork belly with skin).

Is the space suited to a date or gathering?

The interior felt clean and modern. The tables were generously spaced and the seating was well divided, making it comfortable for the two of us to eat. There were private rooms as well, so it also looked suitable for group gatherings or company dinners.

It is also a place you can visit with a pet. We came as a pair this time, but I would like to stop by with my dog if I return to Gwangalli on a future trip.

What comes in the couples’ platter?

Since we both eat well, we chose the couples’ platter. The set felt like better value than ordering the items separately.

The set included shoulder rack and ogyeopsal. The shoulder rack caught my eye first, with thick meat attached to a large bone. It is a cut that includes rib and pork neck meat, and it tasted like pork neck when I ate it. For the ogyeopsal, you could choose whether to have it scored.

There was a varied selection of banchan (side dishes), and we could get more vegetables and assorted seasonings from the self-service bar. It was convenient to add accompaniments to suit our tastes.

How did the shoulder rack taste?

The golden-brown shoulder rack was thick and satisfying to chew. It was crisp outside and juicy inside, with meat juices coming through as I chewed. Pulling the meat from the bone was fun, too.

What did we pair with the ogyeopsal?

The skin-on ogyeopsal had a texture different from the shoulder rack. We alternated between salt, myeongran (salted pollock roe), and pa-jeori (seasoned scallion salad), which kept it from becoming repetitive compared with eating it in just one combination.

In particular, a staff member suggested trying the ogyeopsal with mushroom jangajji (pickled mushrooms). Following their suggestion, I noticed a difference in flavor that stayed with me. The meat had no unpleasant smell, and the restaurant felt pleasant inside. After our walk by the sea, I was satisfied with a meal where we could share two different cuts.
